Not a great traditional ryokan experience for foreigners. Let me preface my review with this: I lived in Japan for 3 years and travel to more prefectures that my local Japanese friends. I have stayed in many Ryokan. I booked it because with only 16 rooms it seemed small and because of the private onsen in the room. The room and room's private open air onsen (hot spring tub), staff, and cleanliness are all 5 stars. Best part of the experience. Dinner was very good. 4.5 stars. I have had better but the presentation was excellant. Breakfast was chaotic. We arrived 10 min after breakfast opened and the dinning area was already full and we had to wait which forced us to change our departure plans by two hours due to a lack of trains leaving this area. The huge banquette area was full because of a couple Japanese tourist buses stopping by just for breakfast. It was super crowded and noisy and very un-zen. Since we were delayed in our plans we decided to relax in our room onsen. Staff started cleaning the room next to us 35 min before checkout talking loud, banging, and making a lot of noise. They did stop when I called the front desk. Overall, for the money spent, the experience did not live up to the cost. I would not recommend. Find a smaller Ryokan for a more personal, truly Japanese, experience and save half the cost.

Room tip: Rooms on the first floor have private hot spring baths

The staff at the hotel are very friendly and attentive, and although English speaking is limited, every effort is made to answer any questions considerately and with as much detail as possible. They were very helpful in ensuring we knew which bus to catch to get to the sights etc. Even without verbal communication, any staff we encountered were always polite and helpful.

The rooms are large and the best thing about our room was the view over the bay - really lovely. We stayed in a Japanese style room which smelled of smoke and tatami flooring and whilst this was bearable, the drains in the bathroom really need looking at. I assume people don’t really use the bathing facilities in the room as the Onsen is so lovely (see below for detail) which means the pipes don’t get used much and there is therefore a very unpleasant smell there.

The Onsen is really very lovely, spacious, outdoor, looking over the bay - thoroughly enjoyable and super relaxing.

We had a bit of an issue with Wi-FI which would have been helpful to know before hand so I’ll explain here. This may not be an issue for most, but as travelers on a long tour of japan, we rely on wi-fi to check routes, transport to next destination and general research, planning and logistics. There IS wi-fi at the hotel but it is confined to the “lounge” area only so you are not able to chill out in your room whilst browsing the net you need to be sitting in the lounge area at reception where you are also not allowed to eat or drink which we found frustrating.

The breakfast buffet was pretty decent and we ate dinner in the village so cannot comment on the dinner at the hotel.

Overall, the hotel is pretty retro and is crying out for a bit of TLC but it’s kitsch and quirky.

There is something slightly odd about the village in general but a great place from which to explore the local area and eat some incredible tuna sashimi.

We stayed here on a coach tour to the Kumano pilgrimage route. It is located on the sea front about a fifteen minutes' walk from the station. It is a genuine onsen ryokan. The hotel is aged but reasonably well maintained. The staff are very friendly. The star feature is their eat as much as you like dinner and breakfast. Nachi-Katsuura is famous for its tuna. Particularly enjoyable is the local seafood delicacies including sashimi. Good value for money..

We stay here for a night.
Check in was fast.
A lady named Rie was assigned to serve us. She is very polite, friendly & is able to communicate well in English.

The outdoor onsen is highly recommended .

The room is big, enough for 3 persons & 3 large luggage bags, a small living area with coffee table & sofa to relax & enjoy the sea view.

Dinner & breakfast are fantastic!
Staff service is great!
Onsen is awesome!

Will definitely return.
