“Fantastic all round”
Reviewed 29 April 2015 for a stay in April 2014

We have stayed in both the cottages and lodges. It's so great we've been 3 times and are already looking to book our 4th. Angela and chris are fantastic and have been great each stay ensuring suitable make up of rooms for children, great toys appropriate to ages and kids just roam around their property exploring and love it. Fantastic location close to Longleat Safari park, great pub 5 mins away. You're never short of anything to do but if you also want to just chill, have a bbq and play then it's great too. Highly recommend .

“Family Gathering suits all ages.......”
Reviewed 28 April 2015 for a stay in April 2015

We had one of the newer eco lodges for a family get together. A mixed group which is always difficult to please...However the Lodges do just that.....the little ones were free to roam around the huge space by the lodges safely and freely nothing was too precious or manicured...which makes for a more relaxing environment. The "older" generation were cosy in the lovely warm lodge equipped with all the necessary cooking equipment and necessary home comforts!...Spacious, clean and ready early for an early check in which helped us enormously. Chris and Angela are great hosts and nothing is too much bother...they were on hand with tips of where to eat and see and their friendly black lab was a huge hit with the kids!
Situated ideally for Longleat, Bathand surrounding areas...beckington has a few great pubs ...saying that it was delightful to come back to the lovely quiet , peaceful setting of the Lodges

“Lovely stay but needs a little bit of TLC”
Reviewed 8 April 2015 for a stay in April 2015

I stayed in one of the cottages at By the Byre four years ago and loved it so was very excited to return again. This time stayed in a lodge as there were more of us staying. I was a little disappointed as I had read on the website that the lodges had been newly renovated. The bed and the sofa in the lounge were pretty lumpy and overall it didn't feel as "nice" as the cottage did four years ago. Also things like there was no mirror anywhere except the bathroom and there are no windows, just doors, which means you can't have a window open at night which made it a little bit stuffy. The bath tap in the main bathroom didn't work so we had to fill up the bath using the shower. The owners were lovely and helpful as everyone has said, we arrived to find bread, eggs and butter all waiting for us which is lovely. We did really enjoy our stay but agree that the place just needs a bit of TLC and perhaps some new furniture.

Thank you for your comments and pleased you enjoyed your stay and awarded By the Byre a 4 star rating. We know your children had a wonderful time running around the garden and you all enjoyed a busy day at Longleat. We will change the website as it does refer to the lodges as new - they are in fact just over 4 years old. The lodges are indeed very lovely and are placed in a delightfully peaceful bit of countryside. We have not been told the mattress is lumpy - but we will sleep in it again this week, as we often do to check it out. The couch is wonderfully comfy and my teenagers spend hours lounging on them, we are simply not sure why this guest found them not so - as the lodge they are less than 4 years old. Each lodge has 3 sets of double doors, and 4 windows, plus the front door, we do point out to guests that the lodge needs to have open windows as due to it's eco friendliness it can get very warm. Guests usually love the airiness of the lodges. We will place a mirror in the hallway. The bath tap does not look like a tap - it looks like the plug opener, we usually point this out - apologies we did not do this on this occasion. We do try to be helpful and are usually around or at the end of the phone to help out on any questions guests may have. We hope these guests will choose to return for a third time in the future.

“Needs a bit of care and attention.”

Fab location, owners helpful and a nice time had.

This said, the lodges need a bit TLC. They appear grey with the wood in dire need of restraining. The bathroom shower curtain was in need of demoulding and net curtains in the living room were grubby, with brow stains and hems had had it. These stains were also a feature in many of the wardrobe corners too.

Someone had emptied the BBQ on the decking and left the ashes and grills there along with patio chairs sprawled around all over the decking, which had wired fencing that was broken.

The surrounding fields and ponds are nice apart from one, although nothing like in the photos as the grass is well overdue a cut. The grass that had been, was not collected and so you walked grass in all the time. In addition there was random items like left around like a trashed set of poles off a marquee left in our view strewn out on a bench rather than removed or hidden. It all needs some fresh eyes and attention.

The place simply needs a few £££ spending to bring it back to its former glory and to justify the price. This was our experience but other lodge dwellers may have had better.

Thank you for comments and pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay. We chatted quite a lot to one of these guests and offered local knowledge on cycling routes - they did not ask us to resolve any of these issues. To respond - the lodges are built with cedar which naturally greys to silver and was chosen especially to fit into the countryside landscape. We apologise about the shower curtain, we keep spares and it was replaced immediately, which we could have done easily whilst you were here. We hope the guests noticed the blinds were brand new, and the curtains have now also been replaced with new ones. 2 of the wardrobe corners had been slightly stained (about an inch, less in the other) as the shower backs onto them - they have now been repainted. (this affected just 1 corner in each of 2 wardrobes). The BBQ we have picked up - the high winds had blown everything around and we just hadn't spotted it and the chairs. The fences have been tightened, again they had come loose in the wind. Yes the grass is being cut- we have 2 mowers, one collects one doesn't - it is an ongoing process this time of year - with the now dry weather, today it looks immaculate. The poles for the marquee are about 50 metres from the lodges and we have simply laid them out to count all the pieces. They are not trashed and our guests are often appreciative of the marquee when we offer it for (wet) BBQ's! We feel £30 per head per night at Easter - plus a cot - represents very good value for money. We can assure future guests that these issues are now resolved and look forward to welcoming them at By the Byre.
