Owner description: The highest dune in Europe, a unique landscape with an incredible panoramic view over the ocean, forest and Arcachon Bay but also and more importantly, a living, natural space that needs to be looked after and protected. Since December 2007, the Syndicat Mixte de la Grande Dune du Pilat has been working to protect and preserve this national piece of heritage that belongs to us all. From the top of this giant (109 meters high, 2,7 kilometers long, 500 meters wide), you can see many remarkable sites of the region.

We went on Easter Monday and there were lots of tourists, just like us.

Unfortunately the weather was overcast, but I can imagine that on a warm sunny day, this place is incredible.

All the same, we loved it. A very magical place, where you just need to sit, contemplate the view and relax. I suppose that the dune is so long that if you want more space to yourself, you can just take a walk to a part where not many people venture.

Be aware that there seems to be no public transport to the dune on a weekends. Hire a car if you need to; it’s worth it.

For those that are widely travelled in other continents, such as Africa and Australia, these dunes are nothing remarkable. However, they are unusual for Europe. I would not travel a large distance just to see these but a worthwhile side trip combined with a visit to Arcachon.

Between forest and sea, one of the most beautiful place in France ! Be careful in August, so much people !!! In Apreil or may, it’s perfect, sunny and quiet

We went during Christmas vacation early in the morning and we enjoyed being alone.
The view is amazing as usual. Overlooking the banc d’Argin and looking at the Cap Ferret: magical.
A little harder to climb in winter as there is no steps, but so much more fun with the kids...

Oh my goodness this was definitely the best part of our break in Bordeaux. Loved Bordeaux but this was something else. We caught the train in the centre (36 euros) for two for an hour each way train ride. So cheap. We went on a sunny Sunday and found that unfortunately the buses don’t run on Sundays but we managed with a bit of difficulty to get a taxi. My tip is to avoid visiting on Sundays then your trip will be much more straight forward. Fantastic place to visit though.
