“The perfect Fench rural holiday”
Reviewed 18 September 2016 for a stay in September 2016

This was written the day after our return home. If you love rural France and want a self catering holiday with comfort and convenience we can't think of anywhere better to stay. The Old Pigeonnier is a spacious and well equipped gite and forms part of Le Chambouny, an old farm that once produced prunes. The English owners Sarah and Des are very helpful and knowledgeable about the local area, so if you want to know the best places to visit, eat or buy wine they are an on site mine of information. They maintain a discrete presence but they are there when you want them. Their dogs Harry and Ozzy are lovely, friendly and well behaved.

The gite itself is surprisingly spacious (more so than the photos suggest) with a large open plan area downstairs. If you come in your own car and are inclined to accumulate lots of local produce to take home (as we are) there is plenty of room to store this without the living area becoming cluttered. The mezzanine sleeping area has an extremely comfortable bed and is cool and airy. The mozzy guard on the window and the gite's situation on top of a hill means a bug free and pleasant breeze most of the time. It was very hot during our stay reaching 36c during the day and 24c overnight, but we both slept really well. There is an effective fan if you need extra air movement.

The swimming pool is very private and a good size, and we found the use of salt to keep the water sterile more pleasant than chlorine. It is covered at night to retain the day's heat and the temperature is absolutely perfect to just splosh about lazily and cool off on a hot afternoon.

We ate all our meals "in" sitting outside at the wooden table enjoying the sunset and the hooting of owls, or at a smaller white table just taking in the peaceful countryside across the valley of the Dropt river. There are plenty of good restaurants nearby and again Sarah and Des will advise depending on your preference. We particularly enjoyed eating under the arcades of the ancient square at Eymet (15 minutes drive along country roads) where the medieval houses all seem to have survived the centuries. There are quite a lot of British ex-pats living in this area so if your French isn't brilliant you can still find friendly locals to strike up an interesting conversation with. They usually have strong opinions about France, and the UK! We also recommend the Sunday morning market at Issigeac (30 minutes drive) and we'd suggest getting there early as it gets quite busy after 11:00. The stalls are set out along perfectly preserved medieval streets with no cars to disrupt languid perusal. The choice and quality of food produce is amazing, along with crafts and textiles. The Pineau des Charentes from M. Choloux is well worth trying.

Overall we felt immersed in the peace and beauty of the French countryside and all that is good about France. The area is full of history without having become commercialised like the busy tourist magnet of the Dordogne region further north. As a French rural holiday it was perfect for us and we will certainly be returning next year. We can't think of a stronger recommendation than that.

“Relaxing and Tranquil”
Reviewed 2 August 2016 for a stay in July 2016

We stayed at The Old Pigeonnier for a week and wish we could have stayed for longer. It is in a rural location with wonderful views and is only a short drive from shops and attractions. Sarah and Des are very kind and helpful, and their dogs are also very friendly.

The Old Pigeonnier has an open plan living/dining/kitchen area with everything you need, a modern bathroom with a powerful shower and bedroom on a mezzanine level with a large comfy bed. The Old Pigeonnier is cool when it is hot but also has a fan. Outside, there are two sets of table and chairs to sit in the shade or in the sun, and there are sun loungers in the porcherie which we used for stargazing.

We enjoyed the tranquil location, beautiful views, relaxing by the pool, reading outside, stargazing, visiting local towns and cities and watching the wildlife. If you love wildlife look out for butterflies, birds of prey, deer, hares and owls. If you're lucky you will see the owls fly out of the barn after sunset. We recommend visiting Bergerac, Duras, Eymet and Castillonès. There is a good night market at Duras where you can buy food and drink and listen to live music.

Thank you Sarah and Des for a wonderful holiday and we hope to visit again.
