What I liked:

big comfy bed, quick check in, quick check out, spacious room, clean bathroom with hot shower, quite, fast wifi, PC at room, basic but still breakfast in the morning, the proximity of convenience store and ATM

What I didn't like:

payment only by cash, air-conditioning dirty inside - needs cleaning badly!, the price was expensive but I guess it was because the long weekend (first week of May) - still - too much as it was a standard Korean 3 stars hotel.

We booked two rooms for just about $90 US. The rooms were spacious and pretty comfortable, but clearly outdated and with some damage like holes in the walls. The man at reception was extremely helpful. He helped us with guiding the car while backing in, giving advice on restaurants and directions. It is in a fairly seedy part of town with gentlemen's clubs and VIP clubs, but was quiet and felt safe. You can't beat the price but was off season.

The place is situated near the bus stations and also a 10km drive to the city of Samcheok, another city. There are also nearby restaurants and bar so yourr not gonna starve. Recommended to try the chukumi for muslim travellers at a restaurant which is only 300m to 500m from there. Nice place to sleep if you plan to play all day and come back to only refresh your body and sleep at night. Very helpful staffs!

The Meridian hotel made for a fairly comfortable stay for one night before catching the ferry to Vladivostok.

We arrived at Donghae station by train from Seoul and were told that there were no convenient public transport options so took a taxi to the Hotel which turned out to be fast and relatively cheap (5mins, 3600W).

The hotel is only indicated in Korean outside the front, but there is a large rooftop sign incorrectly calling it 'Merdien'! Weirdly the outside is inviting with a surprisingly plush lobby in neoclassical style, the corridors are dimly lit and modern and the rooms are shabby and outdated. Our room was spacious with a comfortable bed, a large TV, fridge, as well as a clean bathroom with lots of toiletries offered (toothbrushes, aftershave, soaps, hair gel!). Unfortunately despite being a 'non smoking room' it smelt faintly of smoke and had an ashtray on the table.

The staff were friendly enough. They only take cash payment, but there is an international cash machine next door in the GS25 convenience store. There is an hour window for the breakfast (7.30-8.30) which is simple, consisting of boiled eggs, toast, jam, orange juice and some bready roll things. There is a coffee machine in the lobby 24/7.

The area is lively, with restaurants, bars and strangely neon lit 'V.VIP rooms', but noise was not an issue with the windows closed. It is a short walk to the centre due north, filled with many shops, restaurants and bars.

The ferry terminal was a little further than the station and cost 4900W in a taxi which reception ordered for us. All in all, the hotel could be improved, but I'm not sure there's anything better to be had in the area for the price.

We decided to move from Hyunjin Tourist hotel after 1 night because they don't have any affordable room rate available. To my surprise, The room is very spacious as well as the bathroom. The Heater and the TV share the same remote control which I have never seen before. We booked twin room which costs around 70,000 won but we managed to bargain to 60,000 won/nite since we book directly through the hotel. A lot of restaurants & convenient stores in the area. Overall, worth your money.
