We know the area quite well. The apartment block is situated about 10 minutes walk from the sea, and has a most attractive swimming pool. Calella de Palafrugell is a pretty town with good restaurants.
We stayed there for one week. Before arrival communication was difficult. It was the second week of our holiday and we received an email during the first week advising us that bed linen and towels were extras and saying we should collect the keys from the agent in Llafranc. Had we not had access to email we would not have got this important message. Although we phoned the agent a number of times we never got through; emails were not replied to. We collected the keys and linen at the agent's office.
On arrival we found the apartment had been cleaned only superficially. The cutlery and crockery were all very old and mismatched. All the paintwork was chipped. The hot water tank was very small and did not hold enough water for two showers; the apartment is billed as sleeping five - the hot water supply was completely unsuitable for that number of people. The gas cooker was very old, needing matches to light it; there was no gas cut-out apart from the valve on the top of the gas bottle.
There were no plugs in the basin, bath or sink making shaving and washing up difficult and a bath impossible. The shower head could not be attached to the wall as the fitting was broken. Two of the four table lamps had bulbs that did not work. We visited the very helpful agent the next morning; he arranged for a handyman to come that afternoon, who fixed the problems except for the basin in the bathroom (the plug was of a size no longer available) and one table lamp (the bulb size was not available).
All walls were very thin and we could clearly hear every word spoken by other people using the communal stairway. Luckily there was no-one staying on either side of us. In hot weather one would have to keep windows open (there is no air con); with a holiday site at the rear and a communal swimming pool and grassed area at the front it would have been very noisy.
Overall, the apartment was old fashioned, tired and not up to modern standards.
The apartment had obviously never been upgraded, mouldy shower, dreadful dishes and cutlery, no bed linen or towels and, the linen we hired at a cost was dreadful! The towels were ripped and the sheets worn thin. Miserable in the extreme. The bed cover was pretty awful and after throwing a blanker over it, I got insect / flea bites. I would never recommend this apartment to anyone. We book self catering apartments and cottages frequently in the U.K. and abroad and we are used to a much higher level of cleanliness, comfort and welcome. On arrival the hire office was closed and we had to wait 2 hours to get our keys, we had no notice of this.
