We have just had the pleasure to stay for 2 nights in this beautiful boutique hotel. We had to cut our holiday short due to BA strikes which is a great shame as had planned a 3rd night here.

We arrived after several great days in Bilbao and the approach to the hotel was fitting for a grand hotel. We were met by staff whom had great pride in their hotel. On showing us to our room, which was room 202, it was clear that they wanted us to have a great relaxing time and encouraged us to go up to the turret terrace to see the superb landscape around the hotel.

All staff were superb and so accommodating. The recommended walk to a nearby chapel with superb views and the bird observatory filled our days prior to dining like "royalty" in the Castle. We had the tasting menu on one night with a wine flight - wow, what amazing cuisine. especially the scallops being revealed from a smoking glass cloche. The second evening was a set menu with bottle of rioja and luckily the scallops again! After dining in Bilbao and San Sebastian, the food stood out which highlights how good it was.

On checking out, we had the delightful experience of being given a bottle of rioja and charged a special romantic getaway price, which we had not booked. So nice for staff to ensure we get the best deal and it highlighted again the superb staff at this wonderful establishment. We were planning to go back and will certainly ensure we do and encourage others to go too... but not too often so we can always get a room!

the hotel sorroundings and buildings are fantastic - but the interior needs to be very much repaired and secured - furniture in room is not to be used for comfort - bed is so noisy that you can hardly move without extreme noise.
The restaurant is promising a lot when your read and see the menu.
However , both nights the kithcen was unable to prepare a proper peace of veal or beef.
First evening like chewing gum - was changed to another piece of meat - but fried in slices and too hard.
Next evening a beef fillet was ordered medium/well -was raw in the middel
Just not good enough
Staff was very friendly and good service but kithcen needs a change

This is an interesting place to stay because it is a real castle converted into room. So the rooms are of course a bit unusual. We booked the lazkano suite - which is very large with a high ceiling and huge tub!
They delivered us cava on the roof top which was a lovely touch. Dinner was interesting and authentic and the service friendly.
A nice place to stay!

I’m admittedly a castle buff and Relais & Chateau fan, but absolutely adored the Castillo de Arteaga... the castle-iest of castles. The room (in a turret! Two stores! Little staircase up to the tippy-top with to-die-for views), the friendly, English-speaking and delightfully pastoral surroundings (sheep! UNESCO-recognized park with bird-viewing platform).

Loved it, can not recommend the place highly enough!
