Undoubtedly the very best holiday let we have ever stayed in! Stunning! Absolutely everything one could want or need for a truly relaxing week. Well appointed with all you need. Comfortable beds, gallons of hot water after those wet walks, brilliant log burner with plentiful supply of fuel. Amazing walks, decent pubs and lots of info in the cottage on where to go and what to do. Vindolanda itself is fascinating and incredibly well set out and maintained. Colin is a mine of information and thank you Colin for the hot water bottle!!! Highly recommended and would definitely stay again.

This is our second visit to Codley Gate cottage and once again it was superb. We stayed there with our son and his partner they visited with us before and loved it.This stay our friends also visited and were extremely delighted with the experience.
We love this cottage and are always sad to leave.Everything about the place is first class and we can't rate it highly enough.
You also get free entry to Vindolanda which is fantastic and also the Roman army museum which was also great. The weather was very kind to us and we walked part of Hadrian's wall also on a clear night the sky is adorned with stars and looks amazing. We hope to return soon and can't wait. Thanks Colin and Sonia.

“WALK, LIVE (AND DRINK) WITH THE ROMANS”

Occasionally one is lucky enough to have a holiday that will stick in one's mind, for all of the right reasons, for the rest of one's life - and the holiday accommodation is central to that experience... so go to Codley Gate as soon as you can. Stay in an amazingly appointed cottage, up against the walls of the most significant Roman Fort in the north: it ticks all of the right boxes - with the additional bonus of open out-of-hours access to the fort and its vicus (associated village). How do you ever forget a summer's evening with your family, spent sitting drinking an Italian wine in the footings of a tavern outside the walls of a deserted Roman fort, playing Roman dice games until dark? History hits you square in the face. How many times have you wandered an ancient house, castle or abbey and wished you could experience it alone? Codley is you chance to do exactly that... and live in the house of one of the original archaeologists to work on the site, that is so vast that it still has 200 years of archaeology ahead of it. Easy access to Haltwhistle and Hexham (you do need a car or bicycles)... and the whole length of Hadrian s Wall... this is the ideal location for walking sections of the wall. Sociable and attentive host and hostess, both full of Vindolanda stories, chickens in the garden and a welcome package that puts other holiday accommodation in the shade. Most of their trade, they told us, comes from repeat and return visitors - who could be surprised. I can't wait to return. Thank you Codley - you're grand: see you again soon.

“Lovely isolated cottage for group of friends or family”

Immaculate cottage in a lovely isolated location. We were visiting for a wedding at the nearby Langley Castle so for a group of friends it was spot on. No phone signal so nice to get away from the modern world for a while (although there is wi-fi so not completely isolated!). The Vindolanda site looks very impressive, not that we managed to visit it properly. Next time!
