Took my wife for her birthday and what a great relaxing weekend did we had! Paternoster is a 90 min drive from Cape Town. Our room was very well appointed and we settled in and felt relax immediately! Dinner was exceptionally good and we would not fault anything ! We will be back !

First of all I will start this review by saying: For a proper 5 star experience I will highly recommend to rather go to Strandloper Boutique Hotel which is located right on the beach on the opposite side of Paternoster. That hotel is a pure DELIGHT - and we've revisited several times since our first visit in March. A home away from home.

We will never return to Abalone. The hotel is situated too far from the beach, although we were lucky enough to get the top floor room number 8 with views over the ocean. Room is nicely decorated - but very small. It does not qualify as a 5 star hotel at all. The service was weak and the dinner at their restaurant was a huge disappointment. When you order a dish with vegetables you expect more than one small cherry tomato and a tiny broccoli head. When we complained the chef confirmed that that was the way it was served and was non-apologetic. And for the chef to blame our lovely waitress for their misguiding menu was just pityful. Breakfast was also bland - and the whole hotel experience was simply overpriced and overrated.

Room tip: Upstairs are the better rooms - if you absolutely must stay in this "hotel" (it's actually just a BnB)

Abalone House and Spa is a remarkable gem hidden away in the quaint fishing village of Paternoster. This 5 star slice of paradise offers everything you need in order to ensure you leave feeling recharged and rejuvenated (and just plain spoilt!). The rooms are spacious and comfortable and have all the quirks of 5 star accommodation. Reuben's restaurant is spectacular and offers the best in seasonal cuisine. Really fantastic food! You simply cannot fault it! The Healing Earth Spa (on the premises) is amazing and offer incredible treatments. The staff are all friendly and attentive and it was an absolute pleasure getting to know the general manager, Leigh as well as the others who really went out of their way to make sure we had the best stay possible. Abalone House and Spa is simply a MUST if you are in Paternoster. Spoil yourself! It is so worth it.

Abalone House provided the perfect venue for our July 4th wedding with 35 guests. Leigh, the General Manager was a wonderful hostess; she helped us plan everything from the menus, the flowers, the photographer, the hairdresser, the favours, accommodation for overflow in the village ... even the pastor! The day of the wedding was magical. All of the arrangements were perfect and the wedding on the beach, with champagne to crown the festivities was romantic and beautiful beyond all of our expectations. Our guests were made to feel like royalty by the very gracious staff headed by Leigh. The food was divine and the service very personal and efficient. We would recommend anyone planning a special but intimate event to consider Abalone House.

Room tip: First floor rooms have better views of the ocean

Beautiful rooms with everything you need - the shampoo, conditioner and soap etc are all products from their spa which was such a treat! Underfloor heating in the rooms and bathroom to take the chill off (which the friendly Abalone cats love!). We had a slight problem with the hot water in the bath which was luke warm but the shower was hot and great water pressure. The bed was very comfy with lovely crisp linen. The lounges in the hotel have got couches to relax in with open fireplaces - just perfect. The wine pricing was a bit steep but great wine! We were there for a friends wedding and the setting was absolutely perfect - funky lamps, old books and the food was outstanding! The view from the restaurant is beautiful and the breakfast was great. The Manager, Leigh, is something else!!!!! So hands on, friendly, accommodating, super efficient and she goes out of her way to help with absolutely anything you require. You feel like you have made a friend by the time you leave. Thanks Leigh for making our stay so memorable. I would definitely recommend the venue for a wedding or a night away. You leave feeling spoiled and privileged to have enjoyed their hospitality and to have met the wonderful Leigh!
