“Great place for a relaxing weekend VERY near Nairobi”
Reviewed 30 May 2016 for a stay in May 2016

Manyika House was a great place to spend a weekend with a large group. It can sleep up to about 15 inside the house and we put a tent in the grounds for more. Joel, the cook, nobly fed us all throughout the weekend and did us proud - chocolate mousse, lasagne, roast chicken, apple crumble etc. The house itself is simple but very nice, with lots of old-world charm (it could have done with one more sofa). One of the very best things about the weekend was how far out of Nairobi we felt even though it only took 45 minutes to drive back to Lavington on Sunday afternoon - a very pleasant change from e.g. schlepping up 2 hours from Naivasha. My only criticisms would be that a handful of (smelly) sheep are being allowed to roam around an otherwise nice garden and I watched them gradually munching their way through most of the flowers that were brave enough to show their faces; and that the guard dog was pretty barky at night. But those are minor criticisms and I'll certainly be back.

“Wonderful Weekend Getaway”
Reviewed 12 April 2016 for a stay in April 2016

My family and I had an amazing stay at Manyika House!! Even though we were only able to stay for one night, it provided such a wonderful, relaxing getaway! Joel was an extremely accommodating host and the food that he prepared for us was absolutely amazing! John took us on two lovely walks through the coffee plantation and did a fantastic job of pointing out all of the different plants we saw. The house itself was very well maintained, very clean, and extremely comfortable! We loved it! And we greatly enjoyed getting to know the dogs, Thika and Tanna! Thank you so much for this wonderful weekend!!

“Great place near Nairobi with bags of charm and entertainment for all ages”
Reviewed 7 April 2016 for a stay in March 2016

We had a great weekend and would recommend Manyika house to anyone seeking a getaway from Nairobi. We loved that it was so close and easy to reach.

Joel was an excellent host and very good cook. He didn't seem at all fazed about being presented with a diverse menu and produced delicious meals. He was attentive and discreet throughout our stay. The young children adored the play area with a playhouse on stilts, slide and tranmpoline. The grounds were delightful for relaxing and we enjoyed watching the sheep and hens going about their business.

Pity we didn't bring our golf clubs as there looked to be a brand new course nearby but we will know for next time

“Manyika house, what a beautiful and peaceful place”
Reviewed 16 January 2016 for a stay in November 2015

In March and November 2015 I have been to Manyika house for a silent retreat arranged by Eva Drager. It is a lovely house with a beautiful garden, great food and the staff is very friendly. I found a lot of peace and rest there and would love to join the retreat for the third time.

“Lots of potential but lots of work needed too”
Reviewed 10 January 2016 for a stay in January 2016

First off, the house itself and the grounds are beautiful with bags of potential, IF managed well.

We were travelling with family and unfortunately were very disappointed. For a house that markets itself as a place that children would love to be around animals, the dogs were poorly cared for, covered in fleas, losing hair due to skin diseases and the 3 week old rabbits had fleas jumping on them with the litter tray in the rabbit hutch not having been changed for weeks. In the UK, the RSPCA would have been called out immediately.

On our arrival, we had to ask for the fridges to be cleaned before we could put our food inside. The shelves were covered in blood from meat and there was lots of uncovered, left over food in there. We were a group of vegetarians, so needless to say, seeing blood on fridge shelves is not the warmest welcome!
Shelves in the kitchen were covered in a layer of sticky grease and grime from not being wiped regularly. We had to wash each glass before we used it as they are placed rim down on the icky shelf.

Being the warm season, mosquitoes were out in their masses. Nothing can be done about that. However, when every single mosquito net in the house is riddled with holes and you spend half the night killing mosquitoes which have found their way into your net, added to being completely covered in bites, it does not make for a restful night's sleep!

Hot water for showers is erratic, on one of our nights, only 2 out of 7 of us managed to have showers.

The owner's response to these issues was that we were the last of a line of guests in their busy season, which is why everything seemed to be in a state of neglect. As a peak rate paying customer, it's just not a satisfactory response. If you are prepared to rent out the property knowing it has been a busy time, then be prepared and do it right.... Do not give excuses after the event.
She did offer me a discount on my next visit. However, after the experience we had, and especially seeing our children so upset about the animals being in such a bad state, the chances of us going back or recommending the house to friends are pretty slim. Especially when there are literally hundreds of holiday homes to choose from in Kenya.

What a shame.

Management Response
13 Jan 2016
Dear Deepali, thank you for your review and it?s good to hear that you thought Manyika house and its grounds are beautiful. I?m sorry, and a bit surprised, to hear that despite this, you experienced your stay as disappointing. I am aware that some mosquito nets need replacement, which will be done within the next months and I also know there is a problem with hot water sometimes as our back-up generator doesn?t support things like water heaters and ovens. Unfortunately the power cuts of KPLC are something that are out of our control and part of life in Kenya. Your other complaints about a dirty fridge, sticky shelves and neglected animals are new to me and have never been raised before by other guests, including the feedback I received from guests staying in the house right before and after you. Therefore, to state that ?everything seemed to be in a state of neglect? is neither a true nor a fair reflection of the actual situation as I?m sure that if that would have been the case, it would have come up in our other reviews as well. I guess that the way guests experience their stay really depends on what they choose to focus on. Do you concentrate on details that don?t meet your expectations and allow them to overshadow everything else, or can you see the bigger picture, like the wonderful setting and amazing garden, the beautiful house and friendly staff? Unfortunately I think you chose to focus on the first which, in my opinion, doesn?t do justice both to Manyika and to yourself. In any case, your feedback has been noted and followed up with the staff and I wish you happy and satisfying travels in Kenya!
