“Great view of the city”

Ruins of Shingu Castle
Reviewed 11 April 2018

We had a few hours spare while in Shingu and chose to visit the castle ruins. While only ruins, the grounds were fairly expansive and made for a relaxing walk as we were the only people there at the time and it provided a nice bit of nature in the middle of the city. While probably nothing exceptional compared to other castle ruins throughout Japan (this was the only one we visited so can't make a good comparison), it gives an excellent view of Shingu as it is the highest point in the area, besides for the surrounding mountains. Definitely worth visiting if you are staying in Shingu or have some spare time while in the area, but nothing worth going well out of your way to see.

I visited in cherry blossom season and it was delightful. It is a good climb up the several levels of ramparts to the top, but the reward from there is a view of Shingu interrupted by other isolated hills.

Stunning trees, really nice to walk around and enjoy the nature. We came back here the day we left to take some great photos.

We hadn't planned on going here, but had time so we did. The grounds were very nice and interesting. Many different levels, views and a huge variety of flowers were blooming. The locals take great care in maintaining these grounds and it was just one nice thing after another. There were a lot of hawks flying around and between them, the flowers and the bee's buzzing around it was very relaxing and rewarded us with many fantastic views of the city and river.

There are no structures remaining from the original castle. It is a nice place to visit in the spring when you have cherry blossoms and Wisteria flowers according to the brochures. Lots of stairs to climb. This attraction is quite close to the train/bus station, less than 10-minute walk.
