If you're visiting Curitiba and want to go on a worthwhile day trip, then you can't go wrong with visiting Vila Velha. It's a 60-75 mins drive only, on good roads. It's an easy drive and nice to see the countryside. As for the site itself, I loved the rock formations, and looking at other reviews, you can see they are quite unique. I grew up in East Africa where the Great Rift Valley is situated, and though that is a much larger and spectacular place altogether, this was reminiscent of some views you'd find there, except without the amazing green vegetation in Brazil. It makes you think of the geological history of the area, and it's surprising to see how that lush, green area was once an area under the ocean, and a result of a rift/movement of the earth. I recommend going in the morning so you can take all 3 trip options. The caves near the rock formations are interesting as well, but end the trip with the walk around the rock formations. The guide was good, and it's great to see that they are preserving the area also. Make sure you have a good camera on you.
And if you're looking for a nice place to stay in Curitiba I recommend in this really nice apartment:
