If you're visiting Curitiba and want to go on a worthwhile day trip, then you can't go wrong with visiting Vila Velha. It's a 60-75 mins drive only, on good roads. It's an easy drive and nice to see the countryside. As for the site itself, I loved the rock formations, and looking at other reviews, you can see they are quite unique. I grew up in East Africa where the Great Rift Valley is situated, and though that is a much larger and spectacular place altogether, this was reminiscent of some views you'd find there, except without the amazing green vegetation in Brazil. It makes you think of the geological history of the area, and it's surprising to see how that lush, green area was once an area under the ocean, and a result of a rift/movement of the earth. I recommend going in the morning so you can take all 3 trip options. The caves near the rock formations are interesting as well, but end the trip with the walk around the rock formations. The guide was good, and it's great to see that they are preserving the area also. Make sure you have a good camera on you.

And if you're looking for a nice place to stay in Curitiba I recommend in this really nice apartment:

It is a place to go! A touristic attraction full of adventure, animals and ruins. It is a must see attraction! Does not matter the climate conditions!

This area has beautiful rock formations created by nature itself. It is not possible to go there by your own car. You have to park your car at the visitors center and from there a bus takes you to the rocks. From there a guide walks you around and explains the history of the area. Another bus can bring you to a sink hole and lake, but these are less interesting. It all takes about a half day.

I went to Vila Velha about 15 years ago and it's nice to see how the Brazilians stepped up and made some changes to reinforce preservation of this state park. Our guide ended up being a childhood friend of my dad's back in the 50s in Ponta Grossa, that was pretty cool. The walk around the ruins is a nice little scenic workout. The furnas and lagoa dourada are an ok added bonus. This park really should be a must visit if you're in the area, a trip that only takes about 3-4 hours.

This is a must see place! You really need to go there to see by your self. It is close to Curitiba and can be made in a one day trip (some agents in Curitiba offer one-day trip service) or you can rent a car in Curitiba and drive about 90 km towards to Ponta Grossa. Easy to find and roads are excellent.
The local geology and nature of rocks are unique and have shapes that can be associated to different animals or objects (grail, chicken, camel and coke bottle).
Once inside the park (free access) you can by the tickets for each guided visit you want (3 visits).
The posters are bilingual, but not all guides speak english :(
I strongly recommend the visit. This is a must see attraction!
