My husband and I loved Pura Vida! We were there 8 nights and the whole experience was wonderful. The views were breathtaking and the area was gorgeous. The beaches and waves nearby were warm and so fun to play in. Our trip with OSA zip lining was exciting and challenging. At the lodge were incredible sunsets and the sound of wildlife all around. It was peaceful and serene. On our Mangrove tour with Gersan the caretaker we saw scores of silly capuchins and a dozen or so amazing scarlet macaws! The adventuresome road to Pura Vida EcoLodge became a daily routine with cow sightings on our way. Joe and Gersan was very responsive to any needs we had. We highly recommend staying at Pura Vida. It is Magical!
This is my second time staying here, and honestly it is one of my favorite places on earth— so much so that I left a few hours ago, and am already scheming about how soon I can come back.... and am tempted to give a bad review to help keep this place a secret! It is remote and that is exactly what I love about it! Waking up to the toucans, parrots, scarlet macaws and howler monkeys is amazing. I am not at all a morning person, yet slept on the couch so that I wouldn’t miss dawn - and woke up at 5:00 every morning because I was so excited to see what I could see. Lots of great birding, butterflies, (literally !) and other critters. This is not a good match for folks who are scared of nature in all its forms (for example, the green dart frogs hang out on the steps after the rain, there are geckos and anoles in the house, and the grasshoppers are the size of your hand), but the sunrises and sunsets cannot be beat! Also, the drive up the mountain can be intimidating— four wheel drive is a must, and I strongly recommend getting the higher end model. First time we stayed, we got stranded on the drive because our Jimmy didn’t have enough power for 3 people and the luggage. We got a Montero this time and had no troubles — but do listen to their guidance and get there before dark — 4 PM at the latest if you can. The drive from San Jose always takes longer than you plan. The house has what you need for basic cooking, pots, pans, glasses, flannel coffee maker and hot water pot, etc — which is good because it was better for us to have breakfast in, a big lunch out and then cook dinner in — especially because we didn’t want to miss sunset. Walking further up the road gives more great views. The pool and the outdoor showers are great. The 2 part guide to planning and staying in the house is everything you could ask for and more, and I spent hours each day looking at the wildlife guides in the house. I am absolutely in love with this place, and will be back as soon as I can swing it and will stay longer!
Our experience at the Pura Vida Ecolodge was everything we hoped! The lodge is very much up in the mountains, secluded and peaceful. Gersan and Illi both greeted and helped guide us upon our arrival. Definitely make sure you try one of Illi's dishes- absolutely wonderful! The lodge itself was very clean, beautiful view, and we had many encounters (outdoors) with the wildlife during our stay. The property was great for exploring. Make sure you read all of the information that Joe and Kika provide in the welcoming packages. Many useful tips! Would stay here 100x over again. :)
The Pura Vida Ecolodge is a wonderful place to be, we really enjoyed our stay. Don't worry about getting there, it is easy to find and the drive up is fun! We would also recommend going on the tour with Gersan, his 'secret' beach is stunning and totally safe even for small kids.
Sadly only had two nights here as the property was completely booked up.
We had our two teenagers with us, 18 and 16. The wifi worked to send messages but that was about it. What a fantastic situation to be in because we had the best time we played scrabble and card games in the evening, scrambled up and down waterfalls during the day and just sat and watched the wildlife come and go.
The house was amazing, the beds really comfortable and the upstairs bedroom has an amazing view. It was fantastic to lie in bed to watch the fork lightening at night.
As I said to the owner, it was a privilege to be able to spend time in this amazing home.
Oh and the drive up was fine. We had rented a small 4x4 which did the trick.
