Owner description: Explore this 14th century courtyard castle in Doune, with a striking 100 ft high gatehouse and one of the best preserved great halls in Scotland. The formidable Doune Castle was built for the Regent Albany. The striking keep-gatehouse combines domestic quarters including the splendid Lord's Hall with its carved oak screen, musicians' gallery and double fireplace. This was used as a film location for the BBC production of Ivanhoe and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. As well as being heavily featured in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Doune Castle was also used for the castle known as Winterfell in the pilot of the award winning TV series Game of Thrones as well as Castle Leoch in Outlander.

I loved it because of the Sam Heugan narrated tour, and my kids loved it because of the Monty Python references. A nice hour spent!

I was ooo'ing and ah'ing on my way up to the castle. Between the history of the castle and the excitement of being at an Outlander filming site. The castle was being serviced when we were there. I was happy to see the castle being maintained.

we were surprised by the authentic feel of the castle, it's rather a ruin but takes a good picture. don't miss out on a short walk along the river just behind the castle, on a fine day this is heaven.

The castle is a must see if you like wither Outlander or Monty Python. We even read somewhere that some scenes from Winterfell in Game of Thrones were shot here, but we didn't find any trace of that during the visit.

The audioguide were really valuable, espcially the Outlander and Mony Python versions. The castle it self were beutiful and and very good shape compared to other castles from the same era.
