“FLIGHT ON TIME”
Review of South African Airways

Reviewed 18 April 2019

My wife and I arrived at O R Tambo Airport in Johannesburg via a connecting flight from Skukuza Airport in Kruger National Park. Since we already had boarding passes issued at Skukuza, there was no check-in procedure at Johannesburg for the flight SA571 to Durban on 23rd March 2019.
Johannesburg Airport has a large food-court with restaurants from most major food-chains. We had lunch here since we had ample time before our flight scheduled to Board at 1625.
After passing through the security gates we boarded the Boeing A320-200 through Gate E1 via coach. We were welcomed on board by smiling flight attendants. The seating was 3-3. Legroom was adequate. No screens. The flight was not quite full. After safety instructions, the plane took off smoothly on time at 1655. Flight time was announced to be 60 minutes and the flying altitude 32000 ft. The snack served was a sandwiched bun with a drink. The flight landed smoothly on time in Durban at 1755. Disembarkation was via aero-bridge.

Excellent airline to fly on. It was really comfortable with excellent food. The service was really five star. There was nothing lacking on the flight.

This was our first flight to South Africa. On our way to Cape Town, we flew from IAD to CPT with a fuel/clean up stop in Accra, Ghana (45-60 min). From Accra we flew another ~6 hours to Johannesburg where we deplaned, re-checked our bags, passed through customs, and then got our transfer flight to CPT. The plane we flew in from IAD to Jo-burg was new, had a lot of room and had an area in the bulk head where parents could attach a supplied crib for their babies. I thought that was a nice perk. Each seat had inflight entertainment and US plug ports and USB ports to charge phones. Our flight attendant, Nomsa, was extremely courteous and kind. She was with us from IAD to Accra before a different crew boarded in Accra.

Our return to the US was good as well, however we were on a more dated aircraft. The airline entertainment was finicky, though we managed to get through a movie. There were no ports for charging. Each time SA catered to my diet and were able to server vegetarian/vegan meals. I did put the request in prior to the flight, however. As with most airlines, if you don't make the request ahead of time, you can't guarantee they can meet your dietary requests. I also appreciated the goodie bag in economy all flights (outbound and return) that included socks, earplugs, eye covers, and a toothbrush and toothpaste. They also had pillows, blankets and a headset for all economy travelers. All staff were courteous and helpful. If I fly SA again, I'd just want to be sure to be on a newer plane due to the inflight entertainment and lack of USB ports.

We also reserved bulkhead and exit row seating in order to get extra leg room.

First time i have flown Business Class internationally with South African Airlines. The food and the service was equal to any other airline and I found the flight attendants to be exceptionally helpful, courteous and service orientated. A very good experience.
