“Under the radar”
Review of South African Airways

Reviewed 21 February 2018

If a soccer referee goes 90 minutes without being noticed, this constitutes success. If a flight is unexceptional, this just what the busy traveller needs. So, for a flight from Durban to Port Elizabeth just over a year ago, the terminals at each end were comfortable and functional, while the flight itself, on a quiet, modern, mid-sized plane with plenty of leg-room, seemed to be over almost before it had started. Oh, and what have sauerkraut, kimchi and miso got in common, did you know the rooibos is caffeine-free and why would you not want to have a quick break in Dar es salaam after browsing SAA's excellent in-flight magazine?

We took South African Airways for the first time from Addis Ababa to Cape Town with a 2 hour layover in Johannesburg. It was operated by Ethiopian Airlines, and so we took the Dreamliner, which was very comfortable, even in economy. The food was better than expected - a generous portion of very tender pure breast meat, with a nice flavoring, good bread although the "dessert" left something to be desired. There was also a small snack sandwich when we first left which was also decent. The only thing it would have been nice to know in advance was that we needed to pick up our luggage in Johannesburg and re-check it for the flight to Cape Town, we had to double back and do that once we arrived at the Domestic terminal.

We had a terrific flight eastbound-newer plane, very comfortable business class seats, great meals, nice flight attendants but the flight back was less than satisfactory and we should not have upgraded-plenty of empty seats in coach where we could have stretched out and had whole roles to ourselves. My advice is check the aircraft age and find out how fully booked it is before upgrading. Entertainment AV was not up to current standards on westbound portion. In addition, they changed the flight and had us landing in NY instead of Washington DC. They booked us on a Jet Blue connection-hours later from a different terminal and we had to pay a penalty for changing our connection in Washington.

I went with South African to Jonesburg from Heathrow ready for a safari last Easter for 3 weeks. We decided to go with South African, because it was the one that fitted our time window the best. A pretty good flight it was overnight so we got dinner pretty early on so people could sleep which was good, but it didn't stop there they brought drinks through all night for people who don't sleep on planes like my self. A really comfy seat more than happy sitting in it for a lot of the flight, also a really good atmosphere on board and staff really friendly. The entertainment was faultless really good films to keep you occupied for a long flight which is why it went really quick. The toilets were really clean and nothing wrong with them. We also flew with South African to Namibia from Johannesburg which wasn't as good there was some American sitting on the arm of the chair shouting in a real brash way about how do you kill animals to these with hunting jackets on which was getting annoying but no one said anything no staff came and said pipe it down a bit which was the only problem with that airline. I would go again with them if I go back to South Africa.
