“Sakura Lounge”
Review of Japan Airlines (JAL)

Reviewed 20 March 2019

Narita Airport has got to be one of the busiest airports around. Great food lounges and shops.
BUT, JAL Sakura Lounge has got to be The Best ever.
The food, customer service, accommodations and the smiles are amazing.
All attendants provided the special care personal service.
So very thankful for the experience.

Checking in to take off. Everything was exceptional!
Impeccable & friendly service. From the check-in attendant to the flight attendants. Nothing but smiles and great personal service. Their conversations and smiles made me feel comfortable, relaxed and special. This had to be one of The Best flights ever for me. Thank you JAL 785.

The cabin crew is always impeccably neat and very courteous as the legendary Japanese culture is known for. The food has improved and better. The aircraft is very clean. The pilot knew how to land smoothly. Overall, JAL makes you feel important as a human being and not as a revenue cash cow.

Flew over the arctic.
They have it down.
They dim the cabin so you slept earlier and adjust to the time zone with the least amount of stress.
Food was great service impeccable.
I will always take this flight to Narita going forward.

Flying out of Haneda to Singapore, I arrive quite early around 8 am for my 10:50 am flight. Using First Class check in and priority security line, I was quickly into the JAL First Class lounge at Haneda. At around 8:30 am, the lounge was very busy and almost all the tables and seats in the dining area were occupied but most had cleared out by around 9:30 am. Food offerings for breakfast were fairly standard - sausages, eggs, hash brown, grilled mackerel, two soups (lobster soup, potato an scallop soup). There was a chef making pancakes with strawberry or caramel sauce to order. Set up, decor and food offerings were pretty much the same as the First Class lounge in Narita however one area where Haneda clearly has the lead is in the washrooms - in the men's toilet, twice as many toilet stalls as Narita First Class lounge for a similar sized lounge.

The flight to Singapore was operated using a B777-200 equipped with JAL's top level Sky Suite III fully flatbed seats with direct aisle access from each seat in a 1-2-1 configuration. The seat is quite comfortable and has a small side locker to store the headsets and other small items. The table is a bit awkward as you pull it up and swing it towards you but there is not a lot of flexibility in how to position it. Similarly the seat simply reclines back down to a bed or straightens back up to an upright seat and there is no option to individually control the seat back and the leg support portion of the seat (ie. you cannot raise the leg support without reclining). Also once the seat is partially reclined, it is very difficult to get out of the seat so you have to raise the seat back almost to fully upright position before you can easily get up and go out. Similarly, the table does not work well if the seat is reclined so you pretty much have to have the seat fully upright to use the table for eating. There is a fixed armrest on one side of the seat that does not move so when you recline to a fully flat bed, you actually have to fit your arm under the fixed armrest in the space between it and the seat/bed. Because of this, I found the seat a bit narrow when in a bed configuration but there was plenty of length.

Shortly after take off, we were served drinks and lunch. As usual, food offerings on JAL are delicious and visually appealing. Having had many Japanese meals on JAL recently and seeing an interesting Western offering, I opted for the Western meal with Wagyu beef sirloin steak with foie gras sauce with a bit of oxtail on the side. The beef was very tender and the oxtail wonderfully stewed and flavourful. The starter was interesting too - Moroccan style abalone salad.

Prior to landing, Chinese rice dumplings were offered. This is literally a ball of rice wrapped in leaves and steamed so not much of a snack. Therefore, I opted to also have one of the instant noodles, with udon, soba or shrimp flavoured noodle on offer.
Service as always on JAL was courteous and excellent - no airline's flight attendants are as meticulous about cleaning out its toilets as frequently!

Our flight arrived a bit early but as it was still around 5 pm/late afternoon, passport control on arrivals was very busy. The line-ups for passport control basically occupied the whole of the arrivals lobby and backed up almost to the escalators leading down to the arrivals lobby. It took about 25 minutes to get through passport control and by the time I arrived at my hotel on Orchard road by taxi, it was about 2 hours after landing.

The JAL flight to Singapore was very comfortable, with excellent food and service.
