Boat trips to Ithaca in June?

We are coming to Fiscardo in June for 2 weeks.

Does anyone know if there are any boat trips (or ferries) to Ithaca at that time of year? We will not be hiring a car this visit.

Many thanks

Lynn

A bit late for your question I’m afraid but may help someone else. Ferries run daily from Sami on Kefalonia. There are two ferries, one a bit faster than the other. Use one of the ferry aggregation sites to see times, e.g. ferries.gr or greekferries.gr. We realised that some sites show one ferry company and another site will show another ferry company’s times. It’s all there on the internet, just need to search. You can turn up on the day and buy a ticket (in June this should be OK), or reserve online and simply collect the ticket at one of the two ticket offices in Sami (it’s easy to find them, they are about 100 yds apart on the sea front road). We went in May 2023 and ferries were running daily and very empty of both passengers and cars. You will need to have a hire care or get a taxi from the very small port on Ithaca to Vathy or elsewhere on Ithaca.

You don’t need to go to Sami. There’s a small car ferry that heads to Ithaca and beyond 3 or 4 times daily, from Fiscardo harbour.

If you just want a small boat trip, there’s a few of those too.

Hello, we will be staying in Fiscardo early June 2024. We will have a hire car - is it best to visit Ithaca with the car? Thank you for your advice.

Hi, definitely take the car. Where the ferry lands is on the west of the island with no facilities. The main town is Vathy, worth a wander. But Kioni is lovely (at the top of the island). If you go to Kioni, go via the monastery; can’t remember its name, but there is only one! Amazing views back across Ithaca to Vathy.

Our blog post here might help with the car hire: https://www.mandalaymoon.com/post/car-hire-on-the-greek-islands

Definitely take the car. Ideally stay a night or two on Ithaca as it is gorgeous and worth exploring at leisure rather than rushing around. Ithaca is the laid back Greece of 30 years ago! Vathy is nice but Frikes and especially Kioni are lovely. Don't worry about booking a ferry for June, turn up at Sami, drop into an Agent by the harbour and get a return ticket for the next sailing.
