Route from Clarens to Kosi Bay

Hi,

We are travelling from Clarens to Kosi bay with our 3 kids. Google maps suggests 2 routes: via Vrede or via Ladismith.

I was wondering if anyone could give me any input ?

Thanks!!

Hello and I am quite familiar with that route. Its a long drive and I would allow ten hours. The roads are all ok but I can't tell you too much as you get closer to Kosi Bay? I haven't been that far for some time, and more recently turned south to head to Mkuze. Ladysmith, Dundee are small towns but have fuel & snacks. There is a good service station next to Vryheid, but I can't remember the name? I would consider stopping for a night on route. There are a couple of other options, but they will add 'kms' to your route.

Hi Mark! Thanks so much for your reply! Google Maps gives us 2 options: the first one is via Betlehem/Vrede/Piet Retief. That's the longer route according to GMaps. But I've since heard that the stretch from Piet Retief to Jozini is a nightmare with the trucks. The other option is the Dundee/Ladysmith/Vryheid one. I would prefer this one, as I'd like to stop for b'fast at the Talana Museum in Dundee (my eldest is very much into history). So you are saying that that route is OK? No idea where else I can find out about road conditions...We will def pack snacks etc. Unforunately sleeping over not an option, as our time is a bit short....

Really appreciate your feedback!! Aneen

No problem and the route suggested I would not even have thought of? Your preferred is the best option. I was thinking down the highway, to Durban, then up the highway. Or down the highway then across from Mooi River via Greytown. I haven't used it for a long time but the AA South Africa used to offer some advise (https://aa.co.za/) Talana is a great museum, but its big! Lots to do and see there. As said allow 10 hours to drive as you may encounter coal or sugar cane trucks on the route that will slow you down. Avoid driving after dark, as you may also come across pedestrians & livestock on the roads.

I would definitely do Dundee,Ladysmith having done the routes you mention a couple of times and experience wonderful scenic country side.Cutting across to Kosi is quite ok but Piet /Jozini is awful. Talana is well worth a visit.

Thanks so much for all the advice! I was also thinking scenic countryside, but then people warned me to check road conditions before considering that. But I think definitely Dundee Ladismith. We'll have to start the trip in the dark, as we don't want to do the Jozini - Kosi bay section in the dark! Appreciate the imput a lot!

I have peddled the same reply lately so for that I I apologise but I think road safety is very important for locals and visitors to SA.
