Best way to get around

We're planning a trip in late May and are wondering what the best way to get around might be. Are buses on regular schedules? Where is the best location for shopping and restaurants - the area near the Old Port or the Windmills? We want to be able to walk to and around town for shopping and eating, but don't know if the terrain is hilly or flat or ??? We were thinking of staying at Damianos or Poseidon - would either location be better than the other for being closer to town?

The commercial center of MykonosTown is situated inland between the Old Port on the one side and the windmills on the other. There are slopes and steps in some places but much of the area is flat or has just slight inclines. Basically, it's easy to walk around the streets where you find all the shops, restaurants, bars, galleries, etc. It is not a large area.

There's absolutely no question that Poseidon is better placed if you want easy access to the town ... it's on the edge of town so basically steps from everything, whereas Damianos is atop a hill.

Buses are running in late May with the last bus from town to major beaches like Platis Gialos and Paradise leaving around 11 pm,.

The Poseidon is in a much better location compared to the damianos which is located up a steep hill and is not very convenient at all for easy access to all the bars and restaurants in chora by foot. The Poseidon is literally just a minutes walk from fabrika bus station where you can catch buses to the popular southern beaches and also an easy stroll into town for shopping and sightseeing and all the nightlife etc

Hey Donny B. May I ask where one can get info about the public bus service such as stops, schedules and routes.

The bus routes and schedules are listed on the KTEL site: http://www.mykonosbus.com/index.en.html

Schedules are updated regularly during tourist season so you have to check a week or two before your trip to Mykonos to see when/where the buses are running.

Poseidon is IMHO a great hotel, very popular now and could be fully-booked. Give it a try as its so close to everything with great views from most rooms. Assume you've read all the reviews on TA? There are quite a few wide steps down to Reception from the gates and again down into the pool area (no handrails though)! The pool and bar have a good vibe. We've stayed in all the room types and each one has been good in its own way. Family run and deserves more stars than 3!

Even if you hired a car there is often nowhere ( or spaces) to park so buses are good. We have always hired scooters as my husband has experience and rides a motorbike at home and that way you can park exactly where you want to go. We found it a bit scary as there are loads of inexperienced riders and lots of dodgy drivers about so definitely not for the faint hearted or learners. They make you have helmets in Mykonos too unlike a lot of other islands which is good.

Taxis are not plentiful and we have waited ages .
