Traveling Yellowstone National from Salt Lake City Utah

We will be traveling to Yellowstone from flying in to Salt Lake City Utah airport in late May. We would like to see Yellowstone and Grand Teton. We are wondering should we tour on our own or use a travel guide or tour group. We would like to stay outside park , is that doable.? We are in our 60’s but are fairly active, like to do short hikes and explore. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yellowstone and GTNP. Rent a car in SLC and drive yourself . Yes, staying outside the park is doable. Many visitors do. You would want a couple of nights in West Yellowstone and Gardiner Montana. The town of Jackson Wyoming is about a half hour from GTNP. You would want a couple of nights in Jackson. Do you have that much time? Book your hotel rooms now.

Agree with Connie.

How many nights do you have? I recommend 4 nights for Yellowstone and 2 or 3 for Grand Tetons. If you have more time than that, you could add in Cody and Beartooth highway.

Staying outside the park will increase your drive time but it's doable.

Here is a suggestion:

Day 1 - Arrive SLC. Start the drive north. It's 5-5.5 hours to West Yellowstone. Where you spend this first night depends on your arrival time. It's not recommended that you drive after dark once you get off the Interstate due to the many large animals in or near the road. So...late afternoon arrival, overnight north of SLC. Early afternoon arrival - overnight Idaho Falls. Before noon arrival - get to West Yellowstone

Day 2 - Overnight West Yellowstone

Day 3 - Overnight West Yellowstone

Day 4 - Overnight Gardiner MT

Day 5 - Overnight Gardiner MT

Day 6 and 7 Overnight Jackson. IF you can add a 3rd night here that would be good.

Day 8 - Head back toward SLC. Overnight Park City if you have an AM flight.

If you've got more time we can fill in more sights for you! More is always better for Yellowstone in my opinion, lol!
