Considering a stop at Monument Valley next week on our trip to Cortez, CO from the Grand Canyon. What is the best route for continuing on to Cortez from Monument Valley? How remote of an area is this? What services are near Monument Valley?

Welcome to the forum. It's remote but all very manageable. Your route from Grand Canyon to Mesa Verde on US160 will take you just a few miles away. In Kayenta (plenty of services) just turn left on US163 and drive north about 20 minutes.

Ideally, stay overnight at The View. If you are continuing, just backtrack to Kayenta and continue.

Reasonably likely that there won't be snow on the ground at Monument Valley. Mesa Verde, on the other hand, will be completely snow-covered with limited access to sites.

I would suggest using Kayenta as a fuel-up point.

Have fun.

I think you need to understand that visiting Mesa Verde in March means you will not be able to go any tours of the ancient cliff dwellings. They are suspended during the winter and don't start operating until April. IMO, the tours are the primary reason to go to Mesa Verde.

Totally understand about no tours and much of the park closed, but we will never get here when tours are being given. Is it not worth the stop if we are driving by?

It depends on where else you are going on this trip. It could be that other destinations could use more time....Monument Valley for instance. So share your full plan with us, including how many nights you are staying at destinations.

You won't be seeing much at Mesa Verde in March. If we knew where else you are going, we could perhaps suggest an alternate native ruin to view - Walnut Canyon, Wuptaki, ??

Piling on. Mesa Verde in March is a non attraction. Durango can be, but they’re more about winter and skiing.

Monument Valley is a year round attraction and like always, needs and deserves an overnight stay at the View or Goulding’s. Tell us your complete itinerary and priorities and odds are we can suggest a more desirable alternative to Mesa Verde.

And Cortez is a bland, boring town full of chain hotels and restaurants. There is no charm there, at all. Do tell us what the rest of your plan is.

I've got lots of other stops planned, just trying to figure the best route from Grand Canyon to Cortez via Monument Valley. Also to get an idea of how remote it is....like gas, snacks, etc.

Even though you've been told a few times that going to Mesa Verde in March has a lot of limitations, I guess you are still planning on going there. You've been given the information about route. Gas up and get snacks in Kayenta. Or if this is a lengthy road trip, you should probably travel with a cooler that you keep stocked with snacks, picnic items and water.
