1. Re: Malaria-Free Q

Human malaria is transmitted only by the bites of an infected female mosquito in the Anopheles mosquito genus.

Malaria and mosquitoes have been studied for over 100 years in S.A.

To the best of my knowledge Anopheles mosquitoes are not found at Madikwe.

There are a number of species of Anopheles, restricted to the well known malaria areas of Northeastern South Africa.

Even if there were Anopheles mosquitos in the vicinity. A female would first have to bite someone with Malaria to transmit it to you.

Also, Anopheles mosquitoes generally don't fly more than a 1.2 miles (2 km) from their larval habitats.

I believe that the very low temperatures in Madikwe in the winter also play a vital role.

As per google....."Temperature is particularly critical. For example, at temperatures below 20°C (68°F), Plasmodium falciparum (which causes severe malaria) cannot complete its growth cycle in the Anopheles mosquito, and thus cannot be transmitted."
