New Orleans to memphis

Hi

My husband and I will be arriving in New Orleans on 16th March for 4 nights and going onto memphis for 3 nights. We were going to fly but have now decided to drive stay somewhere for 1 night inbetween and knocking a night off memphis.

We have never drove abroad before and are a little nervous. Is it safe?

Any advice on where to stop off at and what route to take would be greatly appreciated.

TAI

From New Orleans head up thru Natchez and see antebellum plantations then drive just a hour more to Vicksburg. Spend the night and see Civil war park, USA Cairo and MS river. Eat at Rusty on River. It is then about a 3 hour drive to Memphis. You can go the interstate or head up Hwy 61 and stop for Delta blues museum in Clarksdale.

While there are parallel Interstate highways, I would look to US Hwy 61 (The Great River Road), as there is so very, very much to see and do, along the route. It is also a bit more of a "low speed" highway, as opposed to the higher-speed (though not close to the Autobahn) highway.

Thank you for your reply. We were thinking of staying the night in clarksdale looking at the shack up inn as I wanted to visit ground zero. Is Vicksburg a better place to stay for the night? I suppose we could drive into clarksdale for the day from Memphis. That way we get to do both. Decisions decisions. 😁

Thanks Bill.

Some great sites there with lots of info.

Now just need to decide what to do. Is it a safe area do you know? We normally just fly with transfers but wanted to see more of the place.

Thanks.

<<Now just need to decide what to do.>>

I find that the toughest part.

My personal conundrum, with such a trip, is how do I incorporate more of the Natchez Trace Parkway, without deviating too far, or missing too much other stuff - never easy.

I would stay the night in Vicksburg then drive up Hwy 61 to Clarksdale and enjoy the Blues museum and then drive on to Memphis. It is easy to do and we have done it with no problems. We left Vicksburg is the am, got to Clarksdale for lunch and museum and we're in Memphis for dinner.

Thanks PeachBelle

I think we may do that. I did fancy staying at the shack up inn but as its a Saturday night it's a minimum of 2 nights and we only have 1 spare. I'm looking now at hotels in Vicksburg. Will let you know what we decide. Thanks.

We stayed at Shack Up Inn last March and asked if they can accommodate 1 night on a weekend. I was told to call (or email) as they sometimes will allow it. You might check with them before ruling it out. Clarksdale is a must-see if you enjoy blues.

Don't stay in Clarksdale. Stay at the Hampton Inn in Vicksburg. It's clean, has a friendly staff and a good breakfast. Bonus: it's right across the street from the Military Park, which has a nice driving tour through the battlefield.
