Advice on neighboring towns from "locals"

Will be in area several days next month, and heading home 8/21 (day of eclipse). Since it's a Monday afternoon, we assume we will head home after the event. Most of us are from N AL and YES do realize the communities in the path are NOT on our way home. We also realize Blue Ridge is NOT in the center path. But honestly spent countless hours & days looking for the right lodging for our group and couldn't find what we were looking for. So we will do activities around NW GA the other days, but here's my question...

Looking at driving to Andrews, Murphy, Hayesville, or east toward Clayton, Sky Valley to find a good viewing spot, possibly even events for the eclipse, but don't want an impossible drive back,

Gathering info from eclipse websites, other friends, etc but would like input as people living this area know these towns, driving times, etc.

Suggestions welcome!

KM

I would strongly recommend you delay your return until Tuesday. We have a cabin the Blue Ridge area and have been told by folks that are tied to emergency management that everywhere in the path of totality are planning for record crowds. We expect there will be a huge number of visitors from Atlanta what will just drive up for the day. I think the number of people on the roads leaving the mountains will be previously unseen right after the eclipse.
