Traffic New Year’s Day

Hey all! What do you think the traffic will be like on New Year’s Day for my drive from Santa Barbara to San Diego ?

We will spend New Year’s Eve in Santa Barbara and make the drive in our rental car to San Diego New Year’s Day .

We have 2 nights and pretty much the next 2 days in San Diego so don’t have to rush to get there and most likely won’t be able to check in to hotel until 3 pm anyway , so was thinking of checking out Malibu , Laguna beach and san Clemente or any of the other little socal beach towns on way through , any day itineries and time guidance and traffic insights would be useful , we won’t be having a big new years being a family with small kids so can take off fairly early if need be .

Also we will be back in LA to visit Santa Monica a few days later and also staying at Huntington beach on our last night before flying home a couple weeks later so these places aren’t worth considering stopping at .

Hope I’ve been clear and look forward to your replies .

Since you are willing to start early, no problem. New Year Day is a holiday. It is a "hangover" day. People like to celebrate New Year Eve, out dining, drinking, fireworks, partying, etc... get home in wee hours. Early morning (e.g. 6 am) will be very quiet. You will be fine going anywhere. Traffic probably doesn't pick up until about noon or so. (If you drive very early, be careful of drunk drivers on the freeway though. Too much to drink, too late hanging out, but still want to go home before crashing (slang... sleeping), but may actually cause a crash).

Ok great that’s what I was sort of thinking too , might be a good time to drive through LA fairly smoothly and quickly , probably won’t leave that early was thinking maybe 9ish , maybe lunch in Laguna beach or a quick brekkie in Malibu somewhere ?

It'll be an easy drive - barring any accidents, it'll be smooth with no traffic.
