Hi

We would like to visit Boulders beach soon to get to see penguins, from the reviews I read, apparently you can get to see the penguins without getting to pay the hefty entrance fee?

How true is this and how do we go about it?

Thanks.

The can sometimes be penguins at surrounding beaches and areas... but this is not guaranteed.

Boulders has the greatest concentration and the best viewing.

If you walk from the parking area at the smaller entrance, the actual Boulders Beach side, past the gate where you pay to enter the beach, the “free” walkway to the bigger entrance to the penguins viewing site allows you too see the penguins and dassies without paying. We had dassies above our heads roosting in trees:)

The beach is absolutely beautiful and worth paying for, but not if you’re restricted for time.

One does not pay for the beach, one pays for the costs involved in keeping those penguins safe, maintaining their place for them, and not for beachgoers. With this in mind, the entry fee is anything but hefty.

Yeah I have to say, for the conservation effort involved in keeping the penguins safe from people, their pets, and other predators, the entrance fee isn't so bad (and is reduced for SADC nationals at ZAR76 per adult compared with 'foreign visitors' at ZAR152). You can alternatively see penguins at CapeNature managed Betty's Bay (Stony Point Nature Reserve) which costs ZAR25 per adult but it'll probably cost you more in fuel to get there and back from Cape Town than the entrance price difference!
