Seriously considering cancelling holiday in Cape Town :-(

Having organized the holiday of a life time, 2 weeks in Cape Town arriving February 26th we are now very seriously thinking of cancelling due to the water crisis. The BBC has been broadcasting numerous reports about how bad it's getting. If toilet and shower use is being severely restricted I can't imagine what restaurant toilets and staff hygiene conditions are going to be like. Never mind the implications for food preparation. Also personally not being allowed to shower or flush the toilet sounds grim. We realize for the locals this must be horrendous and we feel really sorry for them.

Any suggestions?

It also depends on the physical needs of the visitor. A young healthy male will have no problem coping with the water restrictions. Young kids or older people with possible medical conditions might find the situation extremely difficult to cope with. And as tdevtraveler says, it's supposed to be a holiday, not an endurance test.

Chances are your trip won't be considerably affected by the water shortages but you definitely might be made to forget about some amenities that are unfortunately used in marketing most hotels and apartments. Hotels are deliberately removing plugs from basins and tubs. That Jacuzzi your hotel was revving about won't be in use. Washing machines and dishwashers are mostly disconnected. But the fun won't be less out there. Go and enjoy. Visited last December

My wife and I were talking to a South African couple last week, and they reported that the water crisis is over now, after some improvements/repairs to dams.

The crisis is far from over. Recent rains have begun and we hope for a wetter than normal winter. In fact this week we are expecting a very wet period.
