Where and what to buy for torches (flashlights)

I have seen this question posed before, but am having no luck finding it. We would like to buy a torch ( in Canada more commonly referred to as flashlights/spotlights) in South Africa, probably in Upington before our Kgalagadi visit in a couple weeks. I remember the brand Klarus being mentioned as very good but I am sure there must be others available to buy (buying a Klarus before we leave seems impossible). Thanks for any suggestions on brands/models that would make viewings at the wilderness camps easier in the evening.

Klarus is one of several brands of South African designed and manufactured torches.

I have no experience with Klarus.

Today, there are several brands to choose from and if you pop in to CAPE UNION MART in Upington, I am sure you'll find something suitable.

Perhaps the rechargeable ZARTEK spotlight would be suitable.. I have no experience with it, I am just familiar with the name.

They can be found here:

Shop 43, Kalahari Mall, Corner of Nelson Mandela drive and Van Riebeeck Street, Upington, 8801

Phone:054 331 3631

Hours: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Torches are also available in stores like Pick 'n' Pay, Game, Makro, Mega Mica, etc; but Cape Union Mart is a specialist "outdoors" shop, so they will probably carry a better range

Hi blind bumpy, prob not much help but I use a Clu-Briter. It's a pistol style spotlight ( interesting as your bags go thro X-ray) with an amazing 600m beam. V light with long life rechargeable battery. Made in uk retails at about £55. Don't know wether there are outlets which sell in SA.

Thanks John - you are right about trying to find the Clu-Briter in South Africa. Seems to be a UK thing but sure appreciate the thought. I have emailed Cape Union Mart in Upington to see about stock availability of what they have, just waiting to hear back. 10 days from now will be our first night , at KTC, cannot wait!

We can only hope John, we can only hope..............................

A couple males walked down the road in front of the tents during our last visit, late at night, very loud roaring, we saw one of them, everyone was woken, and out in their little enclosure with their torches.

Have a great time, that year passed quickly after my post on the SANPARKS forum! The more powerful the torch you can buy will pay dividends. We pushed the boat out and bought a Klarus XT 20. It was recommended by forum members so you should be able to get it in SA. It's fantastic and very light weight. CC/Penolva

I think it must have been your posts Charlie that got me thinking of the Klarus. It looks like it is only available online in South Africa (and most if not all) other places as well. As we will not be in any one place for more than about 12 hours until we get to Kgalagadi, unfortunately it is probably not an option for us to get while there. There seemed to be a distributor in Canada here, but they seemed to disappear. We will make do, only 3 days till we leave! (and visit your Mokala treehouse as well!)
