Port Elizabeth to East London

We are planning on staying in Port Elizabeth to do Addo Elephant Park but then have to get to East London. Is the route from Port Elizabeth to East London scenic and safe and worth hiring a car so we can stop off in different places, or are we best just to get a shuttle to take the most direct route? We have a full day for travel.

There are two main routes - the inland N2 national road (fastest) and the coastal R72. The R72 is far more interesting albeit a little slower. It goes through some very pleasant coastal towns such as Port Alfred, Kenton-on-Sea and Bushman's River. The R72 may be the "coastal" route but for most of its distance it is not next to the sea so you won't get the views you might expect. But it is still, in my opinion, a better way to go.

Thanks for your response. The coastal route sounds like it might be the way to go then. Anything you would recommend seeing/doing along this route or anything we should avoid or be aware of?
