We are pretty laid back people who enjoy the beach. We are renting a house in either location. Have been told Puerto Viejo is very noisy. Any truth to this
Puerto Viejo is a busy beach town with lots of shops and restaurants. It’s not picturesque and the beach is not particularly attractive.
Punta Uva has gorgeous beaches on both sides of the point but it’s mostly residential - not a developed tourist destination. It is my favorite beach in Costa Rica but there are limited food options within walking distance.
We stayed in S. Caribbean a couple of times and enjoy the area. But we do not like PV itself. For us, it is good for a visit - going out to eat, do some shopping (groceries, souvenirs), then leave. The beach right in the town is not good at all. We stayed in Manzanillo, Cahuita, visited Punta Uva. We wanted to be close to the national park, so Cahuita was good for that for us. We did not have a rental car, so we needed to be near places to eat and buy groceries. Punta Uva was a bit trickier for that. But it is a nice beach. If you have a car, out of the two choices, I would choose PU.
I have always stayed in Punta Uva, and without a car. Bikes, bus and taxis have worked out fine. Usually only go into PV once or twice for the ATM and some supplies. The only thing is you feel a little stuck in Punta Uva at night, as it’s not really safe to bike, walk or bus then.
Thank you. We just started booked a house in Uva yesterday. We will have a car so all should be good.
Wondering how it went in PU with a car, looking to do the same thing but want to enjoy some bars a night or two while were there. Hope you're having a great trip, thanks!
We are not going until March so we will keep you posted. We booked a house with Airbnb in Uva.
If you have a car in this area, you can easily get to everything. We would typically go out to dinner at various places (PV or the smaller towns with scattered restaurants) and then drive home after. The whole area is pretty low-key but PV is definitely more touristy.
