In split where would be the best place to change sterling to kuna and withdraw kuna using card?

Changing Sterling can be done in banks, exchange offices and post offices. Unless you are changing a lot, in which case it's worth shopping around, rates don't differ that much. When it comes to ATMs be sure you use one that is run by a bricks and mortar bank, rather than an organisation like Euonet. Croatian banks make no charge, but be sure to be billed in Kunas, that way your bank determines the exchange rate not the Croatian bank. That just leaves what your bank charges for ATM use which varies from 4.5% to zero.

Some Croatian bank ATMs do now charge. HPB 18.75 kuna per withdrawal, PBZ 16 kuna. Among the banks that don't currently charge - OTP, Erste, Zagrebacka.

Thanks for the tip-off apt22, times are changing. Did you discover this from bitter experience, or did you discover this from the web. We normally use OTP since that's where we bank, but it would be useful to know if there is information about others who are still charge free.

From my trip over the last three weeks. Fortunately, I never had had to pay the fee as you are warned on the second or third screen and there were other ATMs nearby. Fear the charge might spread to the other banks if they see it as an easy way of making money.

There is EU legislation about charging for ATM use, but this is framed in terms of when withdrawing Euros in another country you should not be charged more than at home. Croatian banks can probably easily wriggle out of this two ways if it's both Sterling and Kunas involved.
