Penguins in May

my toddler wife and I will be in Melbourne in the week of 15-21 May ; it is the beginning of winter season and was wondering if we will be able to catch the penguins at st kilda beach? which part of the beach exactly is the best place to view? is there free parking nearby too and what time do we need to arrive in order to catch it? many thanks!

The penguins don't come ashore on the beach at St Kilda. They come out of the water onto a rocky break water at the end of the pier. They have their nest amongst the rocks. It is not as good as Phillip Island as they don't parade across the beach.

The penguins arrive from just after sunset.
