Car rental
Save

Hello,

Hoping someone could help me with this:

Would you recommend that we rent a car before getting to Exuma or should we just rent it at the airport when we get there? Also, is insurance necessary for car rentals or is it normal to rent without insurance?

Thank you so much!

I have always reserved ahead. Easy enough to do if you know your dates, times etc. So I would say yes, as I can't think of any reason not to. One less worry when you show up. We have not bought insurance any of our three trips.

Here's a start: http://www.bahamas.com/how-to-get-around-the-exumas-rental-cars

Also, put in car rental in the search bar just above where your post appears and read lots of posts about car rentals.

We just returned from Great Exuma and we rented right from Thompson's at the airport, which we had reserved in advance. I did not purchase the insurance as my credit card has coverage for rental cars but you may want to contact your personal auto insurance agent to get his thoughts.

Make sure you get a decent car from Thompson's. Ours smelled like smoke and the battery died on the second day leaving us stranded for a couple hours on the way back from Cocoplum beach. They replaced the car, temporarily with another while ours got fixed. This whole ordeal required me to drive to their shop at the airport a couple extra times and was a major inconvenience in the middle of our vacation, but all in all, they seem okay. If nothing else, it is conveniently located.

We used airport rental car and at the time was quite a bit cheaper than Thompsons. There are others too.

Airport Car Rental is who I always use. Besides Thompson's, there is also Berlie's. I would always reserve just in case. You can't expect the rental to look like they do in the States. Most of them are damaged, dirty, and could have issues. That's just the island way. You'll get used to it. :) Your credit card should cover any insurance issues. Be wary of potholes!!

I'm back from Great Exuma and just wanted to post here that we went with Berlies and had a great experience.

Yes the car was dirty, but who cares. I put a beach towel on the seat and that's it. The agent was at the airport waiting for us on time for pick up and drop off. No complaints.
