First visit to Norway Aurora Borealis priority

Hi planning to go in March probably flying from Newburgh Stewart to Bergen on Norwegian Air. Top priority is to see the Aurora Borealis (thinking Tromso). Also looking to see the Fjords, learn about the Sami, go reindeer sledding and king crab fishing. Saw travel agent today who put together an 8 day trip with all that we want to do, includes ground, train, boat transportaion, hotels and meals. Cost is around 8 grand per person and does not include airfare. A bit shocked at the price. Any reactions/advice? All input appreciated.

Travel agents will in most cases be more expensive than putting it together yourself, especially custom tours like the one your planning.

You can do it all yourself if you want to spend the time. A good place to start is www.visitnorway.com

Flying into Bergen, you would need a domestic flight to Tromsø. Direct flights available at www.wideroe.no Be prepared for these flights to be more expensive than your Norwegian flights to Bergen.

Tours available out of Tromsø are found on their tourist office site, accomodation on booking engines and airbnb.

The King Crab Safari is out of Kirkenes, quite some distance from Tromsø and will add to the budget. You will need a flight or two nights on Hurtigruten cruise ferry just getting there.

Count on needing a night in Bergen when flying out.

A thousand dollars per day per person, without flight(s)? Norway is expensive, but not that expensive. Shop around or do your own planning.
