Visit the Aviation Museum

The "Museo del Aire" (Aviation Museum) at Cuatros Vientos airfield in Madrid houses an impressive (mainly military) collection of aircraft. This airfield was Spain’s first military airfield and opened as long ago as 1911. Over 100 aircraft (fixed wing, rotary wing, gliders and structural components) are currently on display, however the impressive collection also comprises photos and paintings, squadron badges, engines, airfield equipment, weapons, and other memorabilia.

Famous aircraft on show include the Dragon Rapide, which flew General Franco from the Canary Islands to Tetouan kicking off the Spanish Civil War in 1936 and the Heinkel He.111E-1 "Pedro". Assigned to the Conder Legion in Spain in 1937, this German aircraft was so fast it could operate without fighter escort. This particular aircraft is the oldest surviving example.

1. Re: Visit the Aviation Museum

Do you know will they be flying? I read they used to fly the planes every first Sunday o the month for many years but the information I had was old. I'd love to see some of these (La Rata especially!) if they are still being flown.

The aviation preservation museum 'Fundación Infante de Orleans' was set up in 1990 to honor Alfonso de Orleans Borbón, one of the pioneers of military aviation. Numerous aircraft have been obtained and many are in excellent condition. Flights of the planes are regularly conducted for 1 hour at 1pm on the first Sunday of each month except January and August. Exceptionally, on next June 5th FIO'S flights will take place in the Getafe Air Base, the I-16 Polikarpov "Rata" included!!
