I am attending a conference in Essen. I am flying from North America to Düsseldorf airport. Can someone advise me the best way to Essen? I will be staying at the Sheraton Essen Hotel, which I believe is not far from Essen Hbf.

From: Düsseldorf, Flughafen Terminal A/B/C
To: Essen, Philharmonie
You hotel is in walking distance from Essen Hbf. But directly at the Philharmonie U-Bahn / tram stop. Price is anyway the same. Thus with luggage you may want to travel to Philharmonie.
Thanks so much for the detailed advice.
I traveled to Essen in late June and traveled easily from the airport into Essen. I walked with my luggage from Essen to my Air BnB and passed the Sheraton on my way.
My only confusion for a moment at the airport was realizing I needed to board the Skytrain to get to the train platform that would bring us to Essen. From there the process was straightforward — there were ticket kiosks to purchase the ticket (with option to display on English language) and there were monitors indicating the correct platform.
Very easy. Each stop is announced on the train and the stations are clearly labeled to be read from the train.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
In the terminal building, you go the VRR ticket machine and buy a ticket for zone "C". Take the Skytrain (short ride) to the airport train station. There board the next RE train that will stop in Essen. Exit in Essen Hauptbahnhof. Take the underground train U11, direction Messe, to Philharmonie. Total travelling time about 45 minutes.
Thanks for the details.
Or you take a taxi. Should be approx. 70,- € from DUS to the Sheraton Essen.
No, do NOT take a taxi! That's a totally needless waste of money.
Look for the signs to the Skytrain at Düsseldorf airport. This is an automated monorail that will take you to the airport railway station in just a few minutes. Buy your ticket to Essen before you board the monorail. Technically, you need a public transport ticket to ride it. (Any ticket will do.)
See if you can get places in the front row of the first train, have your camera ready and stay sharp. With a bit of luck, you can get a good photo of the monorail in the other direction.
Then, take the RE to Essen. I believe there are two per hour. http://www.bahn.com or http://www.vrr.de will have details. There is also in ICE or IC/EC train, but these are much more expensive. (But still cheaper than a taxi!)
Perhaps the OP is back home by now, the question has been asked in January:-))
