Berlin's new airport is to finally open in the fall of 2017

Chief Executive Hartmut Mehdorn "described the new deadline as a piece of 'happy and good news.' He also said that the company had the project 'under control' now."

I'll believe it when I see it, frankly.

Mehdorn has also confirmed they already need to build a new terminal, as BER was designed for 27mppa and TXL and SXF between them handle 28mppa!

I think it's highly likely that TXL will remain in operation for the foreseeable future. Perhaps it will be used for domestic/EU flights while BER will become the place for long haul traffic. I certainly would welcome that. TXL is a great airport.

Well, good to know when it will open. But when will they close the stupid thing again?

Well it is certainly good that a date has been established, hopefully no more delays. I am hopeful that the new airport will open the way for more nonstop flights from the U.S. to Berlin. Only certain cities right now fly nonstop to Berlin from the U.S.

I'm with Darren, I'll believe it when I actually fly into it

Somewhere I still have the leaflet I picked up at SXF in May 2012 about how I would get to BER by public transport after it opened early the following month! So we really won't know if that Autumn 2017 date was realistic till the day it opens, practically

Doing a google search the pages in English really aren't keeping up with these date changes!!

Berlin is not a hub for Germany,. I noticed recently that Lufthansa has now ditched their Barcelona-berlin direct service. Luckily 4 other airlines do fly the route direct

I will be sorry to lose Tegel, it is s convenient for me. The new one will take three times as long to get to/from and cost a lot more :-(

How far away is it to be from Mitte area and will it have direct train access to it?

The new airport is where Schönefeld is, and yes there will be direct train access to the city.

Tegel is indeed wonderful. Just not imposing enough for the "capital of Europe." I had tickets from NYC to Brandenberg when it was originally supposed to open. Sadly the airline made me give them up when it issued new ones substituting Tegel. As I recall, the City of Berlin decided to be its own general contractor to save money.

I love the U. S.. Nothing is impossible, even the cities are able to fly. Welcome to Berlin, New York, Chicago and Miami...

Are you sure about the "capital of Europe", Rob? Do I have to grow a moustache, have a funny haircut and call my spouse Eva?
