Tram or Bus Route Recommendations

Hello fellow travelers, my wife have an organized tour in June 2022 . Either pre or post tour we will spend up to 5 days in Dublin. Our organized tour begins in Shannon and lasts for 8 days.

We enjoy using public transportation and as an alternative to the Hop on Hop Off buses, (which we have done when necessary. We would like recommendations on possible scenic or orientation routes that give us an appreciation of the lay of the land.

The last two nights of the organized tour will be in Dublin so day trips are possible. I have researched suggestions and am in the planning stage and ordering maps/guide books.

Post tour, we will be staying at the Alex Hotel. Our pace is relaxed and we strive to always enjoy local people, sights, and food. We are comfortable using interconnecting transportation options including DART.

Regards, 1NCF

Since you already know about the DART you should consider doing the whole trip from Howth to Greystones or the other way around. Take a bus to Howth/Greystones, hop on the DART, go to Greystones/Howth and take a bus back into the city. The route is very scenic in places and takes you a good bit along the coast. The DART station in Howth is over "The Bloody Stream" pub/restaurant and you could go in there for food, it's quite good.

As you are staying at The Alex Hotel, you are just minutes walk from Pearse Dart station:

For a really nice day out, I would suggest you take a Southbound Dart as far as Dalkey/Killiney (or all the way to Greystones) for some wonderful views over the bay. Dalkey is a lovely little village with numerous pubs and restaurants in close proximity and has the most fantastic scenery. If you feel fit enough you could climb Killiney hill and just savour the views from up high or just relax and take a boat trip.

If staying at the Alex, you might like to make the Ginger Man Pub across the road your local.

1NCF,

You're very welcome and if your organised tour doesn't take in trips/visits to Glendalough in Wicklow (South of Dublin) or Newgrange (North of Dublin), there are buses that leave not far from your hotel on St. Stephen's Green if you have any interest in seeing them?

If you like gardens, you might like a day trip to our botanic gardens. You could also include a side trip in to Glasnevin museum located at Glasnevin cemetery. Maybe have lunch in the nearby Gravediggers Pub.

As you are that close to Pearse station why not hop the train to Wicklow or Wexford take about an extra hour but you are travelling along the coast.

Just book your ticket online as it will be a lot cheaper than walking up to ticket desk.

Just a couple of suggestions -

Could get the DART to Dún Laoghaire and get the boat to Howth with Dublin Bay Cruises (or could do this trip in reverse)-

www.dublinbaycruises.com/boat-cruises/dun-laoghaire-to-howth/

Get the 44 / 44c bus to Enniskerry in Wicklow and go to Powerscourt. Dublin Bus timetables - www.dublinbus.ie

National Gallery, entrances on Merrion Square and Clare Street. Depending on what days you are in Dublin, there are food stalls in Merrion Square on Thursdays from 12 to 4.

Oscar Wilde's House, 1 Merrion Square. There were plans to turn part of the house into a museum/place to hold events. Not sure what the plan is at the moment with the current circumstances.

You could get the 32 bus (from Lower Abbey Street) or DART to Malahide and visit Malahide Castle.

The Viking Theatre in Clontarf (over Connolly's PUb). You can get the 130 bus from Lower Abbey Street, there are several restaurants here.

Christchurch & St Patrick's Cathedrals sometimes hold music events, keep an eye or their websites.

National Concert Hall, Earlsfort Terrace

If you look up menupages.ie for restaurant suggestions.

The Winding Stair might be a good option for a restaurant.

The Cobblestone Pub in Smithfiled for Trad Music.
