New Westminster (aka: New West) is about a 40 minute drive south-east from Vancouver along the Fraser River. It used to be the capital of BC back in the mid-late 1800's. It's now a part of the Greater Vancouver Regional District. There's an old downtown area with a lot of neat antique shops. There's a tiny casino and Wesminster Quay - a market area. There's a pretty park and a bunch of cute heritage homes, but why are you interested in New West? Williams Lake and New West seem like such random places for someone to ask about.

New Westminster is near Vancouver and directly on the Skytrain route for easy access into downtown Vancouver into Metrotown Burnaby for shopping.

The city was the historic capital of BC but is fairly residential now. Columbia Street sits just above the river and offers a selection of older buildings, many bridal shops and a few other stores. Down below Columbia Street you can access the Westminster Quay market, antique shops and the boat casino.

I haven't timed the Skytrain travel time but it is about 15-20 minutes from downtown Vancouver.

If you'll be driving there is a parkade off Columbia Street that is built above the lower street towards the water.

There is a river cruise company that runs from New Westminster. http://www.vancouverpaddlewheeler.com/ They are near the end of the season but do have special Christmas season trips.
