I know you're not supposed to in a lot of the bars and restaurants -- is it ok to flush your paper in the resorts, or no? Does it matter what it was used for -- as in, #1 or #2? It seems weird and unsanitary to throw #2 paper in the bin, but is that the expectation?

Umm....I've never NOT flushed at a resort. Didn't know there was anything against it...

Yep, the resorts discourage flushing paper, too. Sorry, but that is just entirely too unsanitary for me to comply with.

lol at 'too unsanitary'....how do you think the poor guys who have to get in there and unclog all the plugged sewer pipes from all the north american tourists who can't stomach not flushing their tp feel?

In Mexico, the general rule is, if there is a lined wastebasket next to the toilet, always put your used tp in there.

This does not apply to all hotels and many AIs, as they have their own separate septic systems. But if you go to a local restaurant or stay in a smaller hotel, you should not flush if you see the wastebasket or a sign.

Most hotels that don't want you to flush paper, post a sign. Like Rissask said, if they have their own septic system, which I think many of the larger hotels have, then you can flush the paper.

it's really not that big of a deal.

Well, believe it! ;)

Lots of us who travel regularly to non AIs in Mexico do and have for years. It is not smelly so long as the trash is taken out daily. The wastebaskets are lined and you just wrap before it before you put it it them. No big deal, as mapchick stated.

What I find hard to believe is the diva-esque commentary and reactions, honestly. Get out from your comfort zones a bit more, people...not being able to flush is a very common thing in many countries in the world, not just Mexico...Greece, Croatia, many Asian countries and Latin American countries.

I've lived in Mexico for 12 years and have never NOT flushed and have only twice see signs asking me not to (in remote beach locations). 30 years ago may have been different (and old habits die hard for some Mexicans) but nowadays anywhere remotely "civilized" can cope with flushed toilet paper.
