I heard from someone who lives there that it's not. I was there over a year ago and lived it. Now I am worried about my stay there.
Lived it or loved it? Are you asking during the day or during the night? And centro Guadalajara is a fairly large area that like so many large cities has good and bad areas that may vary by time of day? We have been traveling the area for over 15 years and I can't say we have felt any change in safety. Then again, we tend to ignore the international media and the US State Dept. but rely on contacts on the ground in various areas throughout Central Mexico.
Loved it meant to say. I'm asking during day but would like to know in general
I find sections of the medio centro dreary later at night, its not a night life center except for specific activities or restaurants. Daytime is great. And going to Teatro Degollado, Teatro Diana is just fine. Up to like 11 pm. Other areas are much more lively at night, like basically from Av. Federalismo to the Minerva and Hidalgo to Niños Heroes in the other direction, including the Expiatorio blocks with the UDG and Calle Libertad, Chapultepec, the Vallarta stretch with the Centro Magno and tons of restaurants on Lopez Cotilla. Take a look at google maps. Mexico in general is very safe for tourists, we have taxis and uber as well as good public transport.

i will be visiting guadalajara late october early november , im staying at a hotel in the downtown area , i will post about the safety issue after i return , i hope i enjoy my first ever visit to guadalajara :-)
Just like in the US or anywhere else in the world, safe one day and possible changes the next. I would say that what you saw a year ago may be quite the same today but we do live in a crazy world. We are visiting Guadalajara in a little over a week and at this point don't have any apprehensions. YMMV
We were in Guadalajara about 11 months ago. Stayed in downtown centro- Hotel Mendoza. Two females (girls trip) - left our husbands home, ha! Anyways.... at no time did we feel unsafe. However at night, we walked where other people were walking and our hotel specifically told us not to go down one street close to the hotel at night. Other than that, we loved every minute of exploring Guad as well as Tonala and Tlaquepaque..... (by ourselves)!
I had a chain (inexpensive) pulled off my neck in the middle of the day with lots of people around. Don't know what I was thinking - I know better. Just make sure you are aware of what and who is around you. It can happen anyplace.
Please show some respect to Guadalajara and the Country of Mexico by not using the Gringo term "Guad"! Not only is Guadalajara Mexico's second largest city but it also has a great deal of cultural and historical significance.
I see you are from Oregon - how would you like it if people shortened Portland to Port or Salem to Sal?
NeilC: "Guad" is lack of respect ? really ? I was born in Guadalajara, if we measure you by the same rule, you just said Mexico ? "Mexico" is not a country, the real name is "Estados Unidos Mexicanos" NOT MEXICO " you can even say Mēxihco and it would be it's real name also (if you can pronounce it), but there is no "country of MEXICO". . Come on don't ruin this great site, TA is great for it's people....Guad is ok....
How was it? The safety?
