8 EC$ tax per day for each visitor

The SVG government will begin to tax each visiting woman, man and child 8EC$ for each day they visit SVG. No exceptions. Step off a cruise ship and you will be required to pay the TAX. So a family of four visit Union Island for 7 days will be required to pay 4x7x8 = $224EC in addition to the current service taxes and departure tax. Well as sources say “someone has to pay for the airport”.

The commentary on the SVG budget for 2018 on the Government website (gov.vc/index.php/news/760-new-fiscal-measure…) says: “As part of the government's introduction of new fiscal measures, Minister Gonsalves announced the introduction of a Climate Resilience Levy to be paid by all stay-over visitors in hotels, apartments and short-term rentals of EC$8.00 per night. This will take effect from 1st May, 2018, and the expected revenue from this measure is estimated at $1.7 million.”

It doesn’t indicate how it will be collected - at least not on that page.

Can anyone confirm if this in effect? If so, do you pay at same time as departure tax? Will they accept EC and/or USD? Thanks.

I read the budget speech when it came out and will post a link if I can find it. IIRC, the tax is to be on a per room basis, not per person. The IMF recommended to SVG that it impose the tax, as a number of other tourist destinations in the West Indies have already done. The funds raised are to be used to mitigate the effects of climate change on SVG shorelines, reefs and so forth. Though not clear, it looks as though the tax will be collected through hotels. It's also not clear how/if villa rentals will be affected. IMO, there is some merit in imposing such a tax, given that so many of the visitors to SVG come from countries which are significant generators of the climate change that is generating the need for the tax in the first place.
