R33 Conditions from Hoedspruit/Hazyview to Durban Airpt

We two ladies are first time Africa explorers on a self-drive tour of South Africa and wonder if indeed we can drive this distance in about 9 1/2 hours over 2 days. We understand that there are VERY bumpy conditions, HUGE potholes and fear we could be stranded with an economy car rental by blown tires or busted carriage. We COULD fly from Hoedspruit to JNB/Durban, but we like the idea of being out in the wilds. Would we be in over our heads trying to figure out the maps, find alternate routes for construction or dodging semi-trucks? Please advise.

Potholed roads don't mean you shouldn't drive them, you just have to drive slower and more cautiously. i.e. they take longer.

R roads are generally narrow, have little shoulder and have steeper hills and more corners. They also go through towns where you have to drop down to 60km/h.

You will have a better idea what the roads are like in you use the Orange man on Google Maps.
