Charming interior average food

Very attractive premises with horses, sheep and goats for the children to visit. Had the cheese platter for four. Very pricey and all the cheese tasted exactly the same and not very fresh, except for the feta. Service was good and friendly.

A PROMISE NOT KEPT

Scrumpy Jack is a cute restaurant in the Central Drakensburg,which promises the best cheesecake in the world. The truth is that at best it is mediocre. The filling is gelatinous and too sweet,and the portion was expensive. Otherwise a decent enough place, but nothing very memorable.

Moved to a new location

Every time we visit this part of the Berg we go to Scrumpy Jacks for coffee and a slice of cheesecake. The best in SA I might add. Scrumpy Jacks has moved into their new venue which is much bigger and really smart now. Well done to the owners!

Disappointed 😔

Very dissapointed in the service and whole experience. The pamphlets and FB applauded the restaurant, but we waited long for a menu (although not that busy);one order did not reach the table with the others and already salted/pre-salted (very salty) potato chips were served. When we asked for the bill, we waited once more.. Not being told that the bill is at the cashier to be settled. No opportunity for the client to verify the bill and add a tip. When everything was added up and the amount told to me by the owner who up to that point have not made any eye contact or asked about our meal, I gave my bankcard to the pre-occupied owner who told me that the service charge is not included in that amount. I said I would give my 10‰ in the separate jar provided as the bill was not showed to me to add the tip. The worst experience of our 7 days in the Drakensberge by far. Ten rotten tomatoes!!!

Completely lost its charm

We visited Scrumpy Jacks many years ago in its heyday at its previous location, when it was an absolute institution in the region. Sadly, this appeal is completely gone. We had lunch at the restaurant and specifically ordered two small, ready-made items (quiche and cheesecake), since some of our party were in a rush. We requested for this to be brought to the table first, so that they could eat and leave. When it looked like the food was taking too long, we requested that these two items be packed for takeaway. The rest of our party ordered sit-down items and we only received the “urgent” takeaway boxes when we had finished our sit-down meals. After leaving, we discovered that the cheesecake wasn’t even packed! The menu is extremely limited, with only one vegetarian and one chicken option. The rest is all beef or pork, which is a problem if you have dietary restrictions. The kitchen manager could also be heard shouting at the wait staff by all the patrons, which creates an uncomfortable atmosphere. The deli is also uninspiring. Scrumpy Jacks is now a shadow of its former self, clearly trying to ride the wave of its formerly great reputation. Give this a miss.

Absolutely shocking. From walking in with disgusting sanitiser, to a lady at the till with a crap attitude to the horrible character of an owner, this has to be the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. Their burgers are poor, and having the owner province around like someone with an over inflated opinion of himself allowing food to sit on the pass for over 10 minutes is just unacceptable. To have a chili burger on the menu that is just so hot nobody can eat is brainless, and soggy chips were a huge disappointment. When I walked in, the entire environment felt terrible. And it delivered accordingly. Folks, there are way better options in the Berg, give this one a miss

Not a great end to our holiday

Not a great end to our holiday, we decided to have breakfast there before our trip home. Service is extremely slow, they seem to be understaffed. We were the first to arrive at the restaurant but only served an hour after placing our order, whereas other tables that arrived after us were served first. The kids crumpets were burnt on one side but still served to the kids burnt side down- how deceitful! The remade batch arrived 30 minutes later, 2 of them still burnt. The additional plate of chips that we ordered was forgotten about by the waitress. Eggs were ordered over easy, but served to us well done. Owners were uninterested and didn't bother to check on tables. Items in the shop were incorrectly priced and no effort was made to correct it by the shop assistant and owner. Not recommended if you're in a hurry, however portion sizes are generous and the rest of the food that wasn't either burnt or incorrectly prepared, was delicious.

Ok for a quick stop

Cheesecake was recommended as best in town !! I don’t think so … A bit of a sad cheesecake was presented and the taste was not consistent . Service is slow and the feeling amongst staff is indifference .The place is very clean, toilet facilities are also top notch . Retail section has price labels that have faded - so you have to guess h the prices

Highly recommended!

Highly recommended! We popped in to try their famous honey cheesecake. The kids had milkshakes and we all shared a slice of honey cheesecake and chocolate brownies. Both were absolutely delicious! The owners were friendly, kind and welcoming. The environment was warm and safe. Definitely worth a visit.

Surprised

After having past many times we stopped for breakfast on New Year's Day, as most other venues in the vicinity were closed. We were very pleasantly surprised. The coffees and breakfasts were top notch, the service friendly and quick and it has a lovely relaxed atmosphere. I was therefore also very surprised by some of the negative reviews. We will definitely visit again.

Lovely Restaurant with views

Quiet, stylish and excellent position for light lunch or breakfast. Friendly service, good food prepared by excellent chef. Shop with local produce such as preserves, rusks, coffee and sweets for the road

ANOTHER ROAD-SIDE STALL? NOT A CHANCE!

This is the archetypical "farm-stall and eatery" made MUCH bigger! Conveniently situated on the road into the Cathkin/Champagne valley. A good selection of local and homely produce that overrides the usual touristy stuff-and-rubbish one normally finds in "tourist traps". The menu is honest as are its prices; and the restaurant reflects the rural charm of the area and the good folk who own, run, and work in Scrumpy Jacks. Clean and happy, with truly excellent honey.

Disappointing experience

The atmosphere of the restaurant is not cosy and warm, something you would have expect in the cold Drakensberg. Food is average and nothing exceptional. They don’t pay special care to their quests. Sitting in a restaurant where the door to the outdoor area is constantly opened and closed while a cold wind blowing in is not comfortable and relaxing. They lacked knowledge of wine, don’t even know what is the price of a glass of white wine although its on the menu. We were not impressed at all and will definitely not going back

Great midday tea and cheese cake

Fantastic midday tea and honey baked cheesecake. Place buzzing with families couples and pets in tow! Great atmosphere super food served in style. Cheese cake is what people come for...unique taste patented by owner marelize. Such a great bubby person. Good staff open plan kitchen meals made to order right in front of you. Lots of great local shopping oils home made alternative to medications. Beautiful airy venue...a must must visit SCRUMPY JACKS...make memories here

BEE autiful Food & Honey

All local spots like this deserve a 5 star! The perfect place to grab brekkie or lunch on your trip. The stall is beautifully built, and the gardens beautifully manicured. The shop is well stocked with an array of yummy snacks, oils, beauty products and drinks. They have a bee hive which we unfortunately did not go see, but from this they have an insane range of pure raw honey at ridiculously affordable prices - if you’re a honey badger or health freak, you absolutely CANNOT miss this stop. The restaurant is immaculately clean, a peak into the kitchen confirmed that it was just squeaky and it showed in the food. Their chips? Just get them. Amazing. The beautiful building and furniture offers a perfect photo op, they even have a dedicated “photo corner” which I thought was just lovely. Our bill was affordable, the service good, and our short time there sweet. Keep a look out for their office - brought a smile to our face when we found it.
