The Test Kitchen lived up to being one of the world's top 50 restaurants, with high quality food, service, and decor. The service was top notch, quite quick and friendly. The staff was happy to acquiesce any allergies. Courses were well-paced, not too slow or...fast. The ambience was nice, a bit loud, but it was a dark room. There was a wide variety of meats and cooking techniques in the courses, but lacked a flair or surprising element that would make the dinner a more memorable experience. Overall, it just needed to be better for 900 rand for 4 courses, or 1300 for 6.More

Third time we have eaten here. The service was good, as was the ambiance but the food came up short. Our previous visits were outstanding, and the food was innovative, unusual and really unforgettable. We found the dishes tasty but predictable with no "wow" factor....A pity really.More

Upon recommendation by some friend we visited Test Kitchen in April 2021. The venue did not live up to our high expectations. Although food and wine were great, the setting was only average (i.e. it does not distinguish itself from an average restaurant in Cape...Town, the place was nothing special) and the service was poor. Even in tourist places as the Waterfront and the Camps Bay strip personnel is more interested in the guests and tries to make the evening a bit of an experience. The Test Kitchen waiters learned a few words about the dishes and wines by heart but were not passionate about it. A missed opportunity, as excellent service may be expected for this kind of price. Do not think it would qualify for a Michelin-star and it is beaten by at least five to ten other venues in Cape Town.More

Food was very good, as in any Michelin star restaurant in Spain. Not the best we have tried but very good. Quality/price was for us a little high compared to others. The place is fancy and well decorated but nothing spectacular. The service was very...kind and attentive. Waiting times between dishes were too long compared to what we are used to, but we have the same opinion for every restaurant we have visited in Cape Town. In general, what we were expecting, and for now the best food we have tried here, but for its price.More

Loved the energy from the kitchen. You could hear them talking and cheering, and it was great fun. The decor was minimalistic and dark, possibly so the focus is on the food. We had the extended menu, and I had the vegetarian menu. The food...is interesting and unique and beautifully presented, like artwork, but it was almost too much...like they made it too complicated and tried too hard. Some of the plates were exceptional bites where you could really taste many flavors but some just had too much going on.More

When you walk into the Old Biscuit Mill you feel like you have stepped back in time and walked into the heart of a bustling factory. Only it is not a biscuit factory but a food factory. As you are seated you have a dedicated...waiter telling you all about the food experience you can expect. We chose the 4-course menu and were not disappointed. We spent 2 hours in the restaurant and enjoyed every moment. You were never left waiting for something to happen. When your dish arrived the waiter explained it all to you. My wine glass was never dry. Talking of which, I have never seen such an impressive wine list in any restaurant. It was well worth the bill.More

This review has been 2 years in the making.... When I first heard about The Test Kitchen (TTK) I was amazed by the reviews for this restaurant. Being an amateur foodie myself, this venue HAD to be on my list of ‘must-go-to’ places. I’ve tried...many times to book, but unfortunately, they’re always fully booked. So, while Covid hasn’t really provided any good stories, the one good thing is that locals have been able to get bookings at TTK. This being our family’s first venture out of our home since the Feb 2020 lockdown, we were naturally anxious. But finally going to TTK was exciting. We also decided that our kids were old enough to “go for it” and so they joined us as well. A BIT OF A BACK STORY: As part of my job, I train IT professionals on Storytelling. Many times, I use TTK as an introduction to my courses, to set the scene about how everyone starts off with the same ingredients and similar recipes, but how it takes passion, focus and dedication to separate a ‘nah’ meal from a truly divine TTK experience. So, for me, the expectations were extremely high. Not only has this been a long-term dream of mine, but I’ve been building this place up to my colleagues around the work. (Thanks Estelle for the inspiration to use the story and Gladys for helping me promote it globally) THE BEGINNING From the warm welcome at the door to the relaxed ambience in the restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised to observe the staff being quite ‘chilled’ and friendly, especially to our kids. You know a restaurant cooks well when you can see everything going on in the kitchen. No shouting, no ordering, just a group of chefs hard at work, focused on their jobs, and still smiling for you when you ask to take photos Yes, my kids did point out that “Dad doesn’t plate as well as those chefs”  THE MEALS When dining at a place like TTK, you always want to be surprised by the dished. Simply plating good tasting food is not enough. You want this to be an experience. You want to look at something, assume it to be one type of food but then be surprised at the burst of flavours in your mouth when eating. And this is exactly what Chef Luke Dale Roberts and his team provided. My wife and I joked beforehand about whether there would be any ‘theatre’ in the plating and much to my 10-year-old daughter’s delight, each dish she ordered was specially plated at the table (lucky her) THE DESERTS YUM! Those who know me know that I DON’T DO DESERT! Except at TTK I know I should be writing more about the quality of the food, but really, you just need to try it for yourself OVERALL: Chef Luke Dale Roberts and his team have done an amazing job re-investing TTK post lockdown and making it more accessible to more locals. His ability to source the finest local ingredients and transform them into these amazing dishes is something everything must try, at least once. What an AMAZING experience. I’ll be back for more (and so will the kids)!More

Came with friends without expectations. Discovered a promising and original menu. Immersed ourselves in a warm and beautiful place. Tasted a exquisite food and delicious wine. Experienced a professional and lovely service. For all amateurs of fine dinning experiences and food lovers, I would recommend...any time and will come again.More
