When we stayed at the Fish River Mouth Sun Resort near Port Alfred for one week we had lunch three times in one week at the Historic Pig and Whistle Restaurant in Bathurst (10 km. north of Port Alfred on the road to Grahamstown). This is a lovely pub and restaurant (since 1832) offering excellent food at affordable prices. The... More

Great place. Excellent food. Love the Pig. Short drive from Port Alfred. Sunday lunches are the best.

Arrived and asked for the a la carte menu on a Sunday (as opposed to the fixed menu Sunday roast). Waiter disappeared never to return. A waitress then walked right past us and had to be called back even though she could see we had no drinks or food, did not think to ask if we needed help. Then apologised, brought... More

Thank you for your frank review. We are naturally devastated! As you can see from other reviews on both this and the Hotel's page, we have endeavoured, and largely achieved, a huge increase in positive feedback regarding the accommodation and experience at the Old Inn. We have indeed spent huge amounts of energy and funds in upgrading the infrastructure, rooms... More

The pub is lovely with a good atmosphere-classic old pub. They were very busy when we visited so we sat is the quieter inside part of the restaurant. The service was good and the staff were friendly. Both of us had pies, which were tasty but I had to send mine back to be heated up, which was unfortunate. Not... More

Hi Lara Thank you for your honest feedback. We are struggling to win with pot pies, too much pastry..to little pastry! The fact that you needed a re-heat is of course not good and we apologise for the lapse. The tap water in Bathurst tastes terrible! Safe, but terrible, and brackish. We look forward to your next visit when I... More

Lovely historic setting in this old settlers' village. Good burgers at reasonable prices, but slow service in season. Dogs allowed on the verandah.

Happy new year Colleen. Thank you for the great review. Season is a busy time for our small kitchen so we appreciate the patience of our guests who understand that almost all our food is prepared on the premises. Its tempting and easy to succumb to 'bought-in' burger patties. We look forward to your return visit, perhaps out of season... More

A delightful pub, restaurant and accommodation in a charming village. We booked an overnight stay and met friends for a meal at the Historic Pig and Whistle. What a great place. Our room was spacious and very comfortable, and the meal and pub service was outstanding. The food on offer is fresh and tasty served by friendly, efficient staff. An... More

This is one of my favourite spots when we are in the area. Every nook and cranny is creaking with history and stories of long ago. Today we were seated at a long table on the terrace, the service good and welcoming. The menus are the first indication of the large beer companies sponsoring what could be a very niche... More

Hi Megan thank you for your rating and feedback. We really do appreciate the time and thought that you have invested in your feedback. Let us reciprocate with our thinking: You have observed our famous Inn during the peak season, where SAB sponsors our trimmed down menu (just the printing of the menu). We carry one of the local craft... More

This is a special place. Purported to be the oldest pub in the country. It has a proper pub in the dark English style, non smoking thank goodness. There is an adjoining restaurant which was very good. Service was quick and pleasant despite them being very busy. We visited on the 24th December on a very very windy day that... More

We've just walked out of this place. After waiting 45min for service, the waitress finally arrived to take an order. When we complained about the delay, she said, 'you can stay or you can go'. We left. It's December in Bathurst, it's the one time of the year that you're busy, get more staff!

Dear Heinrich the feedback is warranted. You happened to visit us on the 24 December, where a howling wind drove newly arrived holiday makers in their droves, inland from the beaches to our famous Inn. That day we served 6 times the meals that we have EVER served on any one day in our 5 years of ownership! No amount... More
