About
Padlangs is located 7.5km from Patensie on the R331, en route to the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area, and located in the tranquil Gamtoos Valley. In September 2016 we moved to our brand new premises (500m from our old location). We now have a water splashpad, giant garden chess set, play area for children with a bike track, outside shower for cyclists, and a stunning view of the Gamtoos Valley. Great Food is still on the menu. #Slowfood #Slowzone #Countryfeeling

Spent the day here during their Farmer’s Market... found everything was run smoothly with genuine friendliness and good professional service. Strong foot traffic meant there was a nice vibey atmosphere, kids playing in their water foundation kept them out of parents hair, but still in full view. Extremely scenic location with stunning vistas and green garden areas. Interior was cottage chic, but very nice. Comfortable atmosphere. Strong team with good, friendly service.

We love coming to Padlangs as the kids always ask us to visit so that they can play and we can just sit and relax and enjoy the good food and awesome view of the citrus on the hills. The food is always a winner even if it can take quite a while for the food to arrive depending on how busy they are but remember the food is freshly prepared. Its good to book a table before just pitching up as it can get very busy and the waiting times can get a bit long. The lawn for the kids is just amazing wit the water fountain they can play in and little bikes they can ride etc.

We sat outside, which was very pleasant and had wraps which were well prepared, bursting with filling and served with a smile. We were a bit disappointed with the trip through Hankey and Patensie but the meal, atmosphere, service and setting made up for it. Will be back.

Dave, Thank you for your kind review. PS: Although we know what you mean with the trip through Hankey (and we agree) we must just say that most small town in SA is going backward, but this is not the case in the Gamtoos Valley. See you soon Regards Padlangs team

We opted to try this restuarant out after having heard several rave revues about it. We phoned to book a table and were advised that the only availability was outside. We then booked our table. When we arrived, we were shown to our prebooked table for 4, which was missing two chairs. A rather large party next to us had helped themselves to the said chairs. Our waitress then moved two which were unoccupied. A very angry patron came yelling at us stating that he was using said chairs. The diners at the adjascent tables were all smoking in the outdoor area. We then enquired if the whole outdoor area is a smoking area and were advised that this is indeed the case. We were never notified of this when our booking was made. The manager was very accommodating and moved us to a table indoors. The food was great and very affordable. I think this restuarant would do well to acquaint itself with the current smoking laws and see to it that smokers have a designated area away from other diners.

Dear Mands007 Thank you for the 4 star rating despite the issues regarding the chairs and smoking. I am glad that the manager could assist you. We have one designated smoking area outside on the left hand side as you enter Padlangs. The whole stoep (patio) and grass areas are non smoking. We appreciate your feedback and will make sure to ask patrons when they book where they prefer to sit. regards Heidi

As an enthusiastic diner at the old Padlangs we can't help noticing the difference between the old and the new. The New is much more spacious both inside and out - great play area for the kids - more tables inside or under shady umbrellas; much quieter - being further away from the main road. BUT we miss the cosy friendliness of the old place!. Lunch was great - chicken wings and chips. (small portion of chips it says on the menu - as my wife commented "If thats the small portion I dread to think how many chips are in the big portion!" We felt we could have ordered for one of us and shared it between two and still be satisfied!

Barrie T, Thank you for your review and sorry for my very late reply. We really tried to keep the 'atmosphere of the old Padlangs' but with change comes challenges...we do believe that although bigger, Padlangs is now better to! We strive to give value for money...with a view. Regards Heidi

Set in a lovely part of Patensie. A clean and lovely little restaurant. A great place for families as there is a nice play area with equipment for little ones. We just had morning coffee which was good but the lunch menu looked great . We will be back - reasonable prices.

Arrived in the afternoon, service slow they seem to rely on the 45 min waiting time...Only three tables. Food great and interesting craft beers. Possibly avoid at peak holiday times?

Lynandgra2014, Thank you for your review and sorry for the late reply. Food order times may vary according to what you order - we try to deliver great food from fresh (sorry for the wait non the less) You are quite right - during peak holiday times it is a circus out here but we are thankful for the business as it can be very slow outside peak season. Have a lovely day Regards Heidi

This is one of the gems in the Gamtoos valey with rows and rows of citrus trees and then you get the Padstal that is hidden away right next to the Church. They have moved into new premises and it is really a relaxing venue with either sitting in the Restaurant or under the trees or else in the sun. There is a lot of space for kids to play and run around and the food is excellent. Lamb Curry or else Afval is the best

Stopped for lunch at Padlangs on our way to Baviaanskloof. An hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth on not the greatest, bumpy tar road, but its off the beaten track. Lots of cyclists on the way and seems to be a good place to stop and take a break. Country feel with carefully selected decor. Beautiful views from the stoep with ample seating in the shade under the trees or umbrellas. The fountains for the kids are awesome but I secretly said thank you that my kids are older and no longer want to get into the water with all their clothes on! Soaking wet for the rest of the drive. Attention to detail by the owners - there are swimming towels in the unisex bathroom to dry off the kids when they were done playing in the water. Lots of interesting items in the shop but it needs a good dusting! Some produce also past expiry date. The menu is extensive, lovely hearty food. Fairly quick service taking into account you are warned that your order could take 45 minutes at least to arrive. We had the venison pie - delicious! Pizza - thin crusted and delicious! Salad, burger, kids chicken strips etc. Ordered a chai latte but was served a chai tea latte in stead. Nothing to get excited about and little chai spices included in the tea. All round everyone was happy with the food etc. We also stopped on our return journey but this time for breakfast. The Jaco’s breakfast - roosterkoek, bacon and egg was lovely. The Leeuloop breakfast enough to sustain you an entire day! The padlangs breakfast a good brekkie and the salmon and scrambled egg on croissant was delicious. The kids waited the longest for their food and a simple order of the mozarella cheese croissant with an egg on the side and one with bacon on the side was so terribly botched up that we were done with our breakfast when their half warmed croissants arrived with a slice of rolled up processed cheese on the side. Kids were NOT happy. We did not receive what we’ve ordered. Having waited almost an hour for their breakfast, they each had just the dry croissant and the egg. The bacon came chopped up in a little ramekin. Who serves bacon like that to a 10 year old? The table next to us had lovely crispy croissants served when we arrived? By then, we were all irritated and the queue of 8 people at the till to pay with only one person serving was enough to spoil what could have been another memorable visit. So breakfast is not the best meal time if you also want to relax and take your time as we were chased off because the 12:30 lunch reservation at our table arrived. Breakfast is only served till 11. We were just in time to order but not without huffs and puffs from the waiter.

When travelling unique experiences will stay with a person. This restaurant is set in such a fantastic spot in nature, but the commercialisation distracts from that. Local foods are abundant, yet the menu has very few local dishes. Had to have a roosterkoek in order to try something that does not come from a packet like wraps and tramezzinis. The shop is well worth a visit as home made and locally produced items are stocked well.

Dear SuzvanLog, Thank you for your review and the compliments about our setting. Sorry for my (very) late reply. We strive NOT to be commercial and therefor we have a wide variety of options on our menu (other than the Wraps and Tramezzinis that we receive from Greenshields Bakery) I suggest you look at the following freshly made options too should you visit again: Hearty Bean soup Springbok Carpaccio Lamb Curry Afval Chicken Pie Venison Pie Bobotie Green Fig Camembert & Blue cheese spring rolls Quiche and our lovely salads from a local farm, Waterwiel You will love these! Have a great day Regards Heidi

We recently exited the Baviaanskloof and were looking for a place to eat. We had read about Padlangs and decided to try them. We were not disappointed.Although they were busy, we had excellent service and food. The owner was full of energy and on site--checking everything. Will certainly go there again.

Very nice relaxing atmosphere. Majority of the seating is outside. Ideal water “fountain” for little kids to play. The food is good and very well priced. Be prepared to wait for your food and booking will avoid disappointment.
