My daughter booked Sunday lunch for four adults and one two year old. On arrival it looked like we were the only guests. The menu was quite minimal and my son in law didn’t really fancy anything on the menu. However we were there now...and just make do. Well we are very glad we did. The staff were exceptional, and the food was like great home cooking. We was the only ones there because it was at the tail end of their service, and the staff has been working flat out. All in all a great meal , very friendly but professional staff. 10 out of 10More

My husband and I been booked this hotel months ago I booked a night through booking.com for a wedding, we decided as the hotel looked nice we would book a second night. My husband called the hotel and arranged the second night and explained that...I had a previous booking but instead of one night we would do two the women said fine and that she would cancel the previous booking. My husband stayed there the first night and this is where the problems started whilst my husband left the hotel, the hotel staff allowed other guests into his room to remove his belongings so they could put new guests into his room even though he had already paid for it! The hotels attitude was absolutely appalling and they obviously had no difficulties allowing other people in his room where his wallet and other personal belongings were. Absolutely disgusted by this hotels staff and attitude avoidMore

Today we visited this place for the first time with my husband. and my experience was absolutely horrible. First of all, we ordered 2 drinks and a nachos. We waited 27 minutes for the nachos to arrive. There were 2 other tables with us in...the pub, so it wasn't busy at all... I went to speak with the manager.I think his name was Steven. I explained the situation ,and he was with a careless attitude, yes, it's been a while, he said, "Can I offer you a drink?" I went and asked my husband, he said okay. And I came back, he told me it comes in this time on average, he said 15 minutes. And i show him our online order.. his attitude was horrible. It wasn’t helpful at all....I told him that I didn't go to talk because I needed his free drink!!! I came to inform him that this service and this attitude were wrong. He said to me what do you want me to do.he was like a joke..I didn’t want to discuss him and went my table back.We ordered hamburger and steak for the main course. it came in a short time, and no one came and checked for checking food or anything...he didn’t give any drinks as he offered before..Later, when I was leaving, the same person said to me with a careless attitude, you know, sometimes it happens and gave me the return of the nachos recipt. This was our experience. Thank you!!!More

The pub is situated on the A 120, a busy trunk road connecting Braintree and Colchester. It is typical of an 'Olde English' country pub with low ceilings & doors and a 'cosy' friendly atmosphere. The accommodation is situated above the bar and is adapted...as best as is possible to fit into an old building. If you are used to 'modern, chrome' accommodation, such as you might find in for example, a Premier Inn, with its walk in bathrooms, usb charging points, electronic key locks & integrated co-ordinated fixtures & fittings, this will be a somewhat different experience for you. The food is good with daily 'specials' such as; beef cheek, belly pork & rabbit pie all modestly priced between £10.95 & £14.95. The drinks at the bar are similarly modestly priced with 'house doubles' at £3.50. The pub is a family run business, who are all very friendly and helpful. At the moment there is substantial building work going on, so daytime parking can sometimes be a bit 'fiddly' as there are also contractors & tradesmans' vehicles 'on site'. When the 6 new rooms are finished I imagine there will be an interesting mix of new, modern, up to date accommodation integrated within the setting of an 'old traditional' English pubMore

We pass here most weekends when we are on volunteer duty at nearby Marks Hall butnot at attime when it is open. However we had a meeting which ended at mid day so we decided to try it on the way home and were more...than satisfied. A two course special for £10 was on offer and we both tried this. My starterwas calamari followed by fish and chips and both courses were very good and my wife was similarly pleased with her selection. The bar eating area was warm and comfortable with a roaring log fire on a cold day. Rather basic for the topmost rating but certainly well within the very good range.More
