We were a party of four adults holidaying at Bigbury on Sea, when we booked into the Pickwick earlier this week. We were all in search of pizza, and were all delighted with our meal. The prices were a bit high, but the pizzas were so very good, we were happy to pay that bit extra. Tasty thin dough, generous and fresh toppings, perfectly cooked and they reassuringly took a while to arrive. Delicious! My mighty meaty one was so tasty that I reckon it’ll be haunting me (in the nicest possible way!) for months to come. We’ll be back next year.

My husband and I visited the Pickwick for dinner and were very disappointed with the menu, 3 starters but only 2 left at 7pm, Main courses were very basic pub meals, pizza was very nice, big and tasty. Choice of 3 puddings again basic, we were very disappointed to receive our puddings in tin foil trays and to have plastic cutlery to eat with. The guy that served us was lovely and very helpful. One other thing we find strange is that there is only one toilet for everyone to use which seems very odd for a pub this size.

Dear customer, I am very sorry to hear you were disappointed with your visit. With the influx of customers we are experiencing, yes there is a slightly smaller menu, this is so we can please more people and the kitchen is under less pressure. As for the disposable cutlery and cartons, they were for your safety, our dishwasher was under maintenance when you visited so we chose to spend extra money on disposables for your safety. 5pm-7pm is our busiest time, a lot of people pre order their food, if we had sold out of something by 7pm then we must’ve been incredibly busy! During these difficult, unprecedented times, I think we’re doing a great job looking after our customers and staff.

We visited the Pickwick near Bigbury last Thursday. Several weeks ago I had a take away Sunday roast which was superb! It was so tasty and plentiful I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have visited a couple of times mid week, more recently last week Thurs 15th Oct. Covid19 precautions were adhered to with Sanitiser at various places and the wearing of masks being asked for when waking in the pub, along with track and trace details being sought. At this time there was a limited menu as the new chef adapts the choice of dishes to those that are proving popular. As food is cooked by the chef from fresh there can be a little wait but it is not excessive. On the menu there were a couple of fish dishes, and meat with a variety of vegetables. The chef was more than willing to cater for any specific dietary needs and the foods he cooks are really tasty and well presented. If I have to say anything slightly negative I would say it is cool inside and I had to wrap up but there again I always feel the cold. I would say the cuisine is mid-range heading towards fine dining. The pricing I believe reflects this. I will certainly be back and would recommend for others to try it out. Thank you for a lovely dining experience!

Unfortunately our experience was terrible from start to finish, and the pub failed in every area; service, cleanliness, food were all abysmal. The Italian menu was uninspiring and I had macaroni cheese which looked and tasted like it had come out of a packet. The steak was cold, calamari was undercooked, ham was brown, eggs were overdone, and burger was raw. It’s a struggle to find anything good to say about the food. The bar was a mess, completely understaffed and the staff that were there were entirely out of their depth. We complained to the owner who did give us a bottle of wine to apologise and refunded our main meals. I really hope they manage to turn the place around, it’s a lovely looking pub in a great location and it has so much potential with a better menu, improvements in staffing and a little care, love and attention.

It was our first time visit to Pickwick Inn. Have driven an hour enticed by the special Czech and Slovak menu put on by the chef Walter. Restaurant is in lovely old building with an open fire place. Plenty of parking spaces outside, beer garden and if visiting with kids there are also baby changing facilities and high chairs. Chef Walter came out to greet us and explained the menu and made recommendations. We had our 2 year old with us and agreed with the chef on small child portion from the specials menu. Walter was very friendly, sorted any special requests, nothing was too much trouble. We had a lovely potato rosti starter, it was perfect, not at all greasy like they easily can be. I then had a confit duck leg on red cabbage with dumplings, it was sublime, meat falling off the bone, skin crispy. My husband had a beef goulash in a bread bowl, also delicious and perfectly seasoned. For dessert we had a strawberry steamed pudding with a chocolate sauce and traditional czech cakes with rum custard. Those almost brought tears to my eyes as they tasted just like my grandma used to make them. Portions were very generous, we could hardly finish the amazing feast. It was well worth the 2 hour round trip. My only comment to the inn owner is to put some nice log storage/shelves next to the open fire, it would make a lovely feature rather than having the sacks with logs. Will certainly be back. Many thanks again Walter, you are a true credit to the restaurant.

When we walked in, admittedly early doors, the small number of customers, the bare pine tables, hard floors, whitewashed walls and sports TV didn’t give a great first impression. But the staff were friendly, and we were found a suitable table in a corner where we could settle the dogs. There are two menus, a main one, and one for pizzas. We ordered from the main menu, Mussels Mariniere for me and plaice for my wife. The waiter said that the sauce on the mussels contained bacon, unusual, but not a problem, I’m not vegetarian. Just after we ordered, the waitress came out of the kitchen with two magnificent pizzas for another table, we wondered if we had made a mistake. When the food came it was superb, and HUGE portion sizes. I’d recommend that if you visit you eat lightly for at least 12 hours before. We’d have liked a pudding, but were too full even to share a banofi pie, so we took home some Salcombe ice cream for later. The physical environment is quite Spartan but the service and the food are excellent. Good value too. So don’t judge the book by the cover, wait until you’ve tasted the excellent food.

Staff good, food good, Toilet could do with a good regular clean. .The eat out to help out menu will leave you bamboozled when it comes to the bill. There is a “half price menu “ It isn’t clear the restaurant consider this the price of the food. When the bill arrives another menu with different prices is referenced, £10 a head discount applied. The referenced menu has some fairly hefty prices, no resemblance to discount menu. They haven’t entered into the spirit of the offer, we left feeling we had been taken advantage of.

Hi Chris, As you were informed on the evening that menu was incorrect and as we showed you on your receipt you were charged our regular prices and qualified for a discount of £90. Which is a very big saving, we did not have to opt in to the government scheme, we did it to help the community. You were far from taken advantage of...you saved £90, which is the maximum a party of 9 can save when they have 3 courses each. You were aggressive to my staff come the end and another customer did comment on how rude you were to the two young girls trying to explain your saving. Going out of the way to slander the business after you just saved £90 off your bill is not very in the spirit if you ask me. Every other customer has been overwhelmed by their saving and very kind to my staff.

My husband , mother and partner came to The Pickwick on Tuesday eve not knowing what to expect from the new chef . I had moules mariniere which was absolutely delicious ! I also tried my husbands fish and chips and I would say the batter was so tasty . We all really enjoyed our food and passed our compliments to the waiter who said he would ask the chef to come and talk to us . As it was the end of his service he came to have a chat with him . He told us all about his exciting plans for the menu both lunch and dinner . He is clearly a very experienced chef with a great passion for what he does and we could taste that. We will definitely make this a regular visit ! Rob has a great team , friendly and professional Thank you

We just called into this pub because we were passing, and hadn't found anywhere that could feed a family and put up with our yappy little dog. Despite just turning up, Rob the landlord managed to fit us in with no notice and despite being booked up later in the evening when it would have been far easier for him to say he had no room. That's not to say he can do it all the time, but he was lovely to us and we were very grateful. The staff were really nice and friendly and accommodated all our needs, including fussy kids and coeliac OH. The chef himself came out to discuss our requirements and we had a really delicious meal, this despite the fact that by the time we left, the place was rammed with both locals and holidaymakers. Thoroughly recommend, thank you for doing everything to fit us in. We had a great evening.

We visited The Pickwick Inn to treat ourselves to the Czechoslovakian menu. It is a lovely little pub with a cozy atmosphere. The staff were lovely and friendly. The food was amazing, everything we ordered tasted delicious and the portions were huge. The chef Walter came out to make sure everything was okay with our food and we enjoyed talking to him. Overall we had a lovely evening and we will definitely be back to try other meals from the Czechoslovakian menu.

Booked for Sunday lunch at 1.30pm for 3 people. No social distanced tables despite told otherwise. Very noisy and place wasn't clean. Food took 50mins to arrive and gravy was cold (otherwise food was okay). Coffee never arrived. Appreciate hospitality are struggling with staff but this fell below an acceptable standard. Probably busier than anticipated as staff were evidently struggling. Perhaps better to try again when not so busy or staff levels not an issue.

We had one of the most awful meals at the pickwick inn. Covid safe it is not!! Menus were given to us directly from another table ( no sanitising between) I had to pop to my car to get my own sanitizer. Our meals were put on our table, but we had no cutlery asked for cutlery and told they didn’t have any. The food was not good fish was watery and tasteless as was the pizza and onion rings. Complained to the owner who did not want to hear our complaint. We paid £89.00 for 4 meals and one drink each. I really don’t want to knock people when they have had a bad time with Covid but I would definitely give this place a miss. Just Save your money. Very expensive for poor quality food!!

As we are staying local we booked for Sunday lunch. We were all pleasantly surprised to the amount served and the quality of the food. I had the lamb shank and it was fantastic. Some had beef and some lamb shank also but my sister had the veggie nut roast which she said was great. The cabbage and bacon was fab (hoping to recreate this at home) infact every part of the roast we all thought was gorgeous (my sister loved the cauliflower cheese especially) For dessert we had sticky toffee or tiramisu and wow! The Tiramisu was incredible!!! What a lovely lunch we had, thanks to the staff for the hospitality xx

Whilst the pub has high reviews, it is clearly lacking on service and the chef has a lot to answer for. A member of staff left due to his rudeness whilst we were there. We waited over 45mins for our food order to be taken and then over an hour for it to arrive. With elderly parents in their 80’s, we arrived at 6.15pm and still no food gone 8pm. Loads of orders taken after us and out before ours. Lockdown or no lockdown, this was pure incompetence. When we left the chef was chilling in the garden area as if he’d had a great night at work with no consideration to his customers. So many people unhappy around us. Shocking!!!! Food was good, when it arrived, but unfortunately it was all soured by the experience. The pub is well known for its pizzas, but not a single one on an Italian menu 🤔🤔 Owner is in Canada, so has no idea what is happening in his pub.
